Picking up on Marcus Borg's concept of the gradual post-Easter development
of metaphors and concepts to explain the experience of a risen Jesus, Professor
Karen Jo Torjesen discusses the evolution of four Christological metaphors in
second-century Christian communities to suit their own particular context or
experience. First, she explores the cosmological roots of the ancient philosophical
concept of Sophia or "wisdom," as a metaphor for the divinity of the post-Easter
Jesus. Then she analyzes the Christus Victor image that grew out of the theology
of people who had been persecuted and martyred. Next she deals with the image
of Christ as the divine teacher which was popular among the educated class.
Finally, she looks at the image of Christ as the Pantokrator or world ruler. In each
case she explores the cosmological or social context in which the metaphor arose.
