"William Wegman is one of the art world's most affable subversives. Though identified with various aesthetic persuasions, he has always been a lively maverick, difficult to categorize. He is perhaps best known as the video artist who stole into the modernist academy in the early 70's and shattered its sober facade with a sequence of hilarious tapes starring himself and a canine confederate - his pet Weimaraner, Man Ray. Beneath their engaging comedic surface, however, lies a strong formal base that supports a pandoras box of such provocative ideas as transference of identity and exploration of the realm of the irrational." - Lisa Lyons, Wegman's World Catalogue 1982, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis
