The oceans, covering nearly three-quarters of our planet, contain more living creatures than the land, with the greatest variety, some of them living in the most extreme environments on Earth.

The oceans have long been a source of food and other resources, but scientists are just beginning to explore how the tiniest marine organisms may help prevent and treat disease, have applications in industrial processes, and assist in cleaning up environmental problems. They are also learning how genomic information within these microbes can help us interpret ecological conditions.

These investigations of marine organisms on the molecular level are now possible at Scripps Institution of Oceanography because of the newly developed Scripps Genome Center. The center is integrating the rapidly expanding world of genome sequencing and bioinformatics into mainstream marine biology research.

Join this journey into the marine genome and learn how the biochemistry of microscopic organisms may help shape our future.
