MT125 .S681 1984 v.6
Symphony no. 5
Performed by Andre Previn and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
In this final program, Andre Previn talks about 20th century symphonic trends in different countries ... from Vaughan Williams in England to Shostakovich in Russia. Under Stalin's regime, Shostakovich incurred official displeasure as a "difficult" composer and lived in constant fear of arrest. When his Fifth Symphony appeared, it became known as "the creative reply of a Soviet artist to justified criticism." Yet we now recognize it not as a piece of propaganda, but as a public vindication of the artistic skill of one of this century's musical giants.
