A Beethoven interpreter without peer, Claudio Arrau brings to the "Emperor" Concerto an understanding which ranks his performances of the work amongst the truly great musical experiences of our time. During a career that has spanned more than eighty years, Maestro Arrau has performed this masterpiece with virtually all of the world's great orchestras and has created three milestone recordings of the work for Philips and EMI Records. This program begins with a moving documentary which traces the life of this extraordinary artist from his birth in the village of Chillan, Chile in 1903 to the present day. It follows him on his triumphant homecoming in 1984 after a seventeen year absence and includes his commentary on his own life and music. The program concludes with the Maestro's historic performance of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto in Santiago's Metropolitan Cathedral before 6000 wildly enthusiastic young people.
