Symphony no. 7 (and experts from no. 5)
Performed by Andre Previn and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Most securely established of all orchestral music, the symphonies of Beethoven were greeted by his contemporaries with as much amazement as respect. This program demonstrates how he brought an unprecedented power and dynamism to the orchestra. Andre Previn also examines Beethoven's idealistic support of the French Revolution: He dedicated his Eroica Symphony to the young Napoleon, then tore up the title page in a fury when Napoleon promoted himself to Emperor. Previn also explains how Beethoven came to triumph over his humiliation and incurable deafness.
