Opera in three acts. Music by Léo Delibes. Libretto by Edmond Condinet and Philippe Gille.
Norman Ayrton's production is a subtle musical adventure, superbly conducted by Richard Bonynge to reveal the score as an exquisite collection of ravishing French Song, with a dramatically entertaining story. Lakmé, the gentle Indian priestess falls tragically in love with a British army official, Gerald, but their love is doomed to failure. Joan Sutherland's lovely singing and unaffected simplicity make her an unforgettable Lakmé, and every member of the cast reached the highest standards to match the beauty of her voice and the richness of Clifford Grant's Nilakantha in this outstanding production.
