Opera in three acts and fifteen scenes. Music by Alban Berg, after the play by Georg Büchner.
Berg's war experiences gave him the compassion and loathing to write his first, terrifyingly great, opera, in which a devious world destroys a soldier's sense of identity and turns him into a murderer. Peter Mussbach's highly-stylised production, in its expressionistic artificiality, heightens the emotional intensity of this searing work. In his hands Wozzeck becomes an agonising lament over lost innocence. Dale Duesing, as Wozzeck, is a charismatic, agile performer and Kristine Ciesinski, as Marie, is a consummate singer and actress of Berg's work.
Performers: Dale Duesing (Wozzeck) ; Ronald Hamilton (Drum Major) ; Barry Banks (Andres) ; Dieter Bundschuh (Captain) ; Frode Olsen (Doctor) ; Kristine Ciesinski (Marie) ; Linda Ormiston (Margaret) ; supporting soloists ; Frankfurter Museumsorchester ; Choir and Children's Choir of the Frankfurter Oper ; Sylvain Cambreling, conductor.
Sung in German; English subtitles.
