Brianna felt that she had no future: "There's nothing good inside of me, there's nothing good outside of me. Why would I want to be in this world?" She dropped out of school and turned to drugs and alcohol as a means of coping with the emotional pain of depression.
Darren hurt inside but was ashamed to admit he needed help. "I was in the tough crowd," he says, "Tough guys don't go to psychiatrists." Hiding his pain behind aggression, he was suspended from school for carrying a gun, and arrested seven times before he was eighteen.
Lauren was always tired, and cried constantly without evident reason. Unable to connect with others, she spent much of her time in bed. "It's like being in a well. You can see the light, but when you're really depressed there's no ladder you're so far down."
Chris was diagnosed with clinical depression when he landed in the hospital after a suicide attempt. "I really had no sense of self-worth," he recalls. "To me it didn't matter if I died or lived." He realized that he had probably had the illness for most of his life.
The video also includes commentary by two psychiatrists and a social worker who discuss the nature, causes, symptoms, and consequences of clinical depression; as well as the available treatments. This profoundly touching and provocative video is must viewing for college and high school audiences, as well as for all those who love and work with them.
