Caryl Phillips was born in St. Kitts, West Indies, and has published five works of fiction, including Cambridge and Higher Ground, which present different perspectives of the African diaspora and explore the anatomy of slavery with stylistic virtuosity and memorable characters who tell the stories of those who survived slavery. He read from Crossing the River, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, on March 7, 1995, in Los Angeles. A writer-in-residence at Amherst College, Mr. Phillips received a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction in 1994.
