Eduardo Galeano, born in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a journalist, historian, caricaturist, and political activist who is best known for Memory of Fire, a fictive historical trilogy of the Americas from the first native myths to modern times. The trilogy is a brilliant collage that strives to restore the cultural heritage of Latin America. Mr. Galeano said that "the reality of Latin America is more fantastic than the lies we've been told, and nothing is more horrible or poetic than the truth." Mr. Galeano read from Walking Words, The Book of Embraces, and from Memory of Fire on May 23, 1995, in Los Angeles.
