Set in the rugged hills of old-world France, this powerful story of greed and passion begins with the simple ambition of one man, Jean Cadoret. He's a hunchback who inherits a farm from his mother, and foolishly hopes to become a gentleman farmer.

But even before he arrives, his powerful neighbor, Cesar Soubeyran (portrayed by the legendary Yves Montand in the greatest role of his career), is plotting to steal his land. The wily Cesar knows of a hidden spring on the property. Working with his sneaky nephew, Ugolin, the greedy old man intends to use the water to grow a lucrative field of carnations.

When Cesar's wicked scheme - and a severe drought - bring Jean to the brink of destruction, the courageous farmer makes one last attempt to find water on his land. But his noble efforts lead only to heartbreaking tragedy.

The saga continues when Jean's daughter, Manon, takes her revenge in the powerful sequel, "Manon of the Spring."

French with English subtitles.
