Profiles the life and culture of the ancient Near East-Egypt, Canaan and Mesopotamia-and recalls the Exodus as a crucial event in Israel's self-conception and as a metaphor for all human freedom. It recounts the history of the Israelite people in the Biblical period, their transformation from a loose confederation. It examines the birth of monotheism and its growth, into the dynamic national religion, and concludes with the exile of the people.
