Based on the book by Henri Alleg, which appeared in 1958 and denounced the use of torture in Algeria, the film covers the arrest and ordeal of the editor of an Algerian newspaper confined by some parachutists during the Algerian war of independence. Mixing fact and fiction, the film describes the suffering of this man, his extraordinary courage, and, ultimately, his victory over humiliation and lies.
