The program looks at numerous issues and events including Glasnost and Gorbachev's efforts to carry out perestroika, the contrast between vociferous public support for reforms in the West and the lack of support in the Soviet Union, the effects of reforms in eastern Europe and the unification of Germany, regional unrest within the Soviet Union, amendments to the Soviet constitution, and, ultimately, the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
