For most American 18 year-olds, senior year in high school is a year filled with hope and expectations for the future. But for Sokly "Don Bonus" Ny. It is a challenge to simply graduate and survive his complicated life of housing projects and family problems.
Ny captures the daily activities that seem like the life of any teenager: school, teachers, and friends. Through on-camera monologues. Ny also captures a deep personal side, confessing fears and desires, and revealing the inner struggles leading to a slow maturation. Ny serves as his own counselor, therapist and documentarian.
Shot by Ny himself and produced in collaboration with veteran filmmaker Spencer Nakasako, a.k.a. DON BONUS is a powerful self-portrait of a young Cambodian immigrant growing up in today's America and of America itself growing up in the 90s.
