This period was quite complex. In Western Europe, the intellectual awakening of the Renaissance began to alter the attitudes and habits of all people. Discoveries in science, art, philosophy and many other disciplines created a new intellectual climate that began to affect the religious and political life of all Europe. A new world of religious tolerance and economic opportunity emerged in 17th-century Holland and in England that held promise for Jews and otherreligious minorities. Meanwhile, in Eastern Europe, Jews working closely with the Polish nobles were helping to develop the agriculture and industry of new territories. These days of greatest hope for Eastern Europe's Jews were brought to a violent end by a wave of invasions and rebellions that left the land desolated. Still, in the west, the ideals of Enlightenment philosophers were beginning t offer new hope of a future of tolerance.
