A naive newlywed couple honeymoons in Rome, where the wife watches the production of "Fumetti" (pulp Italian comic books that use photographs of actors instead of drawings), and becomes infatuated with the actor playing her romantic idol, The White Sheik. She runs off with him, only to discover that the vain, insecure actor is utterly unlike her fantasy hero.
Federico Fellini's first solo film as a director is both a caustic romantic comedy and a compassionate examination of the role of illusion in the reality of everyday life. With droll and devastating humor, Fellini (La Dolce Vita, Amarcord, 8 1/2) expresses affection for fantasy even as he resolutely dramatizes the truth.
Italian with English subtitles.
