In 1915, Charlie Chaplin left Keystone Studios (where he had started his film career a year earlier) and signed a contract with Essanay Studios. It was here that Chaplin refined his beloved "little tramp" character, most notably in the film "The Tramp."

At Essanay, Chaplin continued to develop his style, introducing elements of pathos, satire and irony into the broad farce and slapstick that marked his earlier work. This collection of Chaplin's early Essanay films spotlights the emergence of the distinctive comedic genius that would catapult Chaplin to cinematic greatness and glory. And, as always, Chaplin's films are treasure troves of future stars-to-be - looking for a young Gloria Swanson in "His New Job."
