The explosion of scientific discovery has been facilitated by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The process of amplifying DNA of interest about one-billion-fold by PCR is documented in this video. Principles of PCR are illustrated with animation. Precautions are used to avoid contamination, a potentially serious problem with inexperienced investigators. Optimization of PCR and three methods for detecting PCR amplification products, including oligomer hybridization, are outlined.
