Bill Viola creates installations that combine video and sound in intriguing ways, using a high level of technical skill. Excerpts from his past works show the wide range of locales he has used - including filming in fire and underwater - and the many themes he touches upon, such as the manipulation of time and the suspension of gravity. Chronicled here is the making of The Greeting, created for the 1995 Venice Biennale. The artist describes how a 16th-century painting depicting the Virgin Mary greeting her sister Elizabeth made him think about the universality of greetings. Shown are all the steps in the installation's creation: from the lighting of the set and the directing of the actors to the opening of the exhibit in Venice.
