This is one of the most comprehensive videos on training a pleasure horse. The video begins with choosing a prospect for training. Steve Heckaman reviews conformation and way of going that is an indication of a good pleasure horse. He begins the first stage of training with round pen work. This is where Steve teaches the horse to give his head with forward motion. Steve demonstrates what he does in the first 30 days of training. He begins by using a side pull to help the horse learn to give and follow his head. The next stage is to teach the horse body control and demonstrates what is to teach the horse body control and demonstrates what exercises he uses. The main goals in training a western pleasure horse are collection and body control. Collection is achieved by making sure that the horse is balanced and has his shoulders elevated as demonstrated in this video. This video proceeds to the 3-year-old and putting him into the bridle. Steve's goal is to produce a horse that is a more solid and consistent performer. He discusses the introduction of the bridle and exercises that are fundamental at this stage of training.
