of one of the major works by Einstein. "Does the Inertia of Body Depend on its Energy Content?" contains Einstein's derivation
of the most momentous formula, dangerous and utopian, of the atomic age: his statement of the mass=energy equivalence E=mc2,
the famous formula which has become almost synonymous with his name. (but which is not given as such in this text): "IF A
BODY GIVES OFF THE ENERGY L (i.e.E) IN THE FORM OF RADIATION IT'S MASS DIMINISHES BY L(i.e.E)/c2 . This is all there is to
it (see also the 1907 paper), except for a penultimate sentence in his note which must rank as one of the most extraordinary
understatements ever published in a physics paper: "It is not impossible that with bodies whose energy-content is variable
to a high degree (e.g. with radium salts) the theory may be successively put to the test." Weil 10*; Schilpp-Shields No. 10. Source: History of Science Collection, QC1 A7 ser.4 v.18
