1 June 1959
Academician V. Kondratiev
Academy of Sciences
Moscow, U.S.S.R.
Dear Professor Kondratiev:
I am writing to tell you that my wife and I have just had the great pleasure of seeing your daughter dance, during the appearance of the Bolshoi Ballet in Los Angeles. We attended the Ballet several times, and were fortunate in that your daughter was dancing during each of the performances that we attended. Our daughter and son-in-law also accompanied us to the Ballet.
I sent Marina a letter, inviting her to visit us in our home. However, I am afraid that the letter went astray, because we have not heard from her, and now the company has gone away. In the letter I asked her to extend to you and Mrs. Kondratiev the best regards of the Pauling family.
We are looking forward to seeing you again in Moscow, perhaps in another year. I had thought that we might be able to come to Moscow this year, but it has turned out that our schedule has become too full. I have been working on the preparation of a new edition of my book The Nature of the Chemical Bond. It will be published in December of this year, in both American and German editions.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

4 June 1959
Dear Peter,
Thanks for your letter with the information about the reference on the nickel chloride ion.
I should have been keeping in closer touch with you about our plans. First, I was appointed to the Solvay Chemistry Committee, but too late to permit me to change my plans in order to come to the Solvay Congress.
Second, Mommie and I are to leave on Saturday, 6 June, for Portland. I give the commencement address at Reed on Sunday. Then on Monday we fly back to Los Angeles and change to SAS for Copenhagen. We go directly on to Oslo, where we probably shall stay between 10 and 22 June, On 22 June we expect to arrive in London, SAS 511, 1:15 P.M. We have reservations at the Welbeck Hotel, made by the Ciba people. On Wednesday I give my talk. The conference continues on Thursday and Friday, with a big dinner on Friday and a Royal Society Conversazione on Thursday. There is an excursion to Greenwich by boat on Saturday. On Sunday we go to Germany, returning on Sunday 5 July. We shall have to go directly to Cambridge when we return, because I speak at the Conference on Proteins the first thing Monday morning. The conference ends on Thursday 9 July. We don't have any definite plan then for a few days. On Tuesday 14 July, 10:00 A.M., we leave for Africa. We are going to visit Dr. Schweitzer. Please do not tell anybody the dates of our visit to Dr. Schweitzer. Then we shall return directly to Stockholm, and, after a week in Stockholm, fly over the Pole to Tokyo, and then home.
I haven't understood why you have been thinking of going to Stockholm on June 10. Perhaps it is Oslo that you had in mind.
I shall look forward to seeing you and Julia and Thomas.
Much love
Dictated by Professor Pauling

Dear Pete:
We have been thinking about summer plans, and perhaps the time has come for further discussion. We are planning in arriving in Geneva on June 17th, via Los Angeles, New York, Boston, New York, and Paris. The house will be not quite finished when we arrive, so I daresay that the first few weeks will be spent in getting everything ship-shape. Besides the painting and furnishing of the house, I am bringing along two dynakit amplifiers and pre-amps with a stereo-converter, so I'll be pretty busy putting all those together. I am also carrying along my Tandberg Tape Recorder and some dozen or so tapes of my favorite records.
I understand that you will be through with your work towards the end of June. On or about the first of July, I am due to pick up a Porsche in Stuttgart, and I wonder if you and I could arrange to meet there to take delivery, then we could drive it back together. Or, you and Julia could meet me at Stuttgart and we could drive somewhat more leisurely and perhaps sightseeing a bit on the way back to Geneva.
I think it is fine if all three of you come to Geneva to stay with us, I have reservations about asking Joy to manage a household consisting of others than our children, however.
[Page 2]
To sum up, it looks like our away-from-Geneva time must be after June 20th. If you can manage to arrange things so that you can accompany us, fine. If you have to leave in the middle of the trip, that can be arranged.
In addition to the above thoughts, I also have a desire to get to Paris for a day or two, and to get to London for a week or so to examine automobiles. I want very much to examine the Jensen more closely and possibly pick up an old M. G., such as the K-3. I'm still looking for a six seater convertible, and perhaps the Alvis should be looked at.
I'm also extremely anxious, like you, to putter around, relaxing and enjoying the vacation. I think that photography is just the ticket. When you come, be sure to bring some of your favorite negatives.
I've been driving myself crazy the last couple of weeks making tape recordings. It's a much more laborious task than one would first imagine. However, we'll have some kind of music, I hope.
Our address is, Hermitage-Lac, La Belotte, Geneva, Switzerland. The telephone number is 82144. The number of the concierge, M. Dupraz, is 82417.
Much love,
Linus
[Handwritten note: Love to Julia and [indecipherable], for looking forward to seeing you!]

Monday 15 June, 1959
Dearest loves Anita and Linus,
Many thanks for your letter which I was pleased to receive.
The situation is this. Julia's mother has said that she will not take Thomas after the 15th of July, and we just do not know anyone else with whom we can leave him for a month, or even shorter. We agree it is just too much for Joy to take on and I see no real alternative other than bringing him and being unable to go off with you to Denmark. It is a shame because we were looking forward to this journey with you.
It might be possible to find an institution for him; I think that a Swiss institution probably would be better than an English, the only English places are setup for unwanted children. So- you might cast around a bit for a suitable place. The only disadvantage is Thomas' lack of French. There ought to be something nice in Geneva or about.
We shall arrive in Geneva at 1650 on Monday 29 June, if that is agreeable to you, from Zurich. We are going to Zurich on Saturday 27th June and will ring sometime that weekend. We are visiting the Dunitz's 14, Bahnhofstr,, Rueschlikon bei Zrich, 92-28-87.
I would certainly like to go to Stuttgart with you. It is good fun. Did you get a five speed box?
I am a little worried about the parents and wish to make a suggestion to you. They have written today to me saying they will be at loose ends from Thursday 9 July (they are in Cambridge then) until Tuesday 14 July, and I suppose they expect to visit us then, since I have not written to them. I suggest that if you would like they visit us all in Geneva for these few days, though I am not sure that it might not be too hectic for them or for you. They are in Oslo now, I do not know where but shall make a possible address. I suggest c/o Prof. Hassel, Chemistry Department, University of Oslo, Oslo as a possible address for the parents. They are coming here on Monday the 22nd. and will stay at the Welbeck Hotel, W. 1 until the 29th when they go to Germany. We shall see then a little while they are here I suppose. There is a CIBA conference.
It is examination time here. Quite a lot of depressing work. I do not like the examination method, and hope to change it somewhat. It is a long uphill fight to change anything in this bloody country.
We have made an offer on a house, but I expect we shall not get it. It is just up the road from Joy's, and I have discovered a lot of other friends and near friends live in the area. It is quite a nice house, part of the roof is missing and all the windows. It would be a while before we could move in. There is a very nice pub across the street.
We shall be pleased to hear from you and to see you.
Much love,
[Peter Pauling]

- Typescripts: Review of The Way Things Are, by P. W. Bridgman, June 18, 1959. [Filed under LP Manuscripts of Articles: 1959a.10]
THE WAY THINGS ARE, by P. W. Bridgman, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1959.
Bridgman in this book is doing something that in my opinion many scientists should do: he is attempting to understand the world as a whole in the same way that he understands (at least in part) the fields of physics in which he has been interested. He discusses many aspects of the world form a point of view that may be indicated by the following quotation from his Introduction: "Two convictions have been growing upon me - a conviction of the importance of a better understanding of the nature and the limitations of our intellectual tools, and a conviction that there is some fundamental ineptness in the way that all of us handle our minds. It becomes more and more impossible for me to read any of the great philosophical writings which have excited universal admiration from the time of the early Greeks - my mind simply will not do the things that it is obviously expected to do. The recent Treasury of Philosophy of Dagobert Runes is to me an utterly depressing exhibition of human frailty. At the same time, the importance of putting my finger on what is the matter appears more and more pressing."
Bridgman feels that his new insights cannot be dissociated from his practice of "operational analysis," which has revealed itself as a fruitful line of attack - he says that "analyzing the world in terms of doing or happenings, as contrasted with analyzing in terms of things or static elements, amounts to doing something new and unusual." Moreover, he points out that sharpness and absolute rigor in any analysis are unattainable, and that the best that can be attained is relative rigor in a limited universe of discourse and operations. I, too, think that philosophy will make progress in the same way as physics has, during recent decades - through a series of successive approximations - and that self-consistency and logical rigor are not important attributes of philosophical system.
The last section of Bridgman’s book, on the social implications of his method of attack, has especially interested me, because the conclusions that he has reached differ greatly from those that I have reached by a rather similar attack. I agree with his statement that "nothing less is demanded than a new system of ethics, an ethics concerned with the exercise of social pressures by the individual on his fellow." Bridgman formulates a code of value for value, under which a normal individual in a society will not wish to take from society anything for which he does not make return. He points out that there has been during the last thirty years a progressive worsening in the apparent valuation that society places on the teaching profession, and says that it is now easy to see that if the teachers as a class had had some organization they could have secured some action to counteract this trend, which would have been to the advantage of all, society and teachers as well.
His attack on social problems is illustrated in an interesting way by his discussion of the question of taxation. He asks "How shall we insure that society does not take from a man in taxes more than it returns to him in some other form?" He gives, as an example a tax that satisfies the principle of adequate return to the individual from his taxation, the gasoline tax, which requires that the individual pay to society an amount proportional to the number of mile that he drives, and he mentions the sales tax in general as similarly satisfactory. The graded income tax seems to him to be unjust. He describes it as a step toward acceptance of the communist ideal of the welfare state. One argument that he presents seems to me to be fallacious. It is that "the individual with abnormally large income requires special consideration. In general he is not able to, or as a matter of fact does not, spend all his income on living, but accumulates it and usually plows it back into capital investment. Such investment is for the advantage of society, so that a strict application of the principle of quid pro quo demands that the proportional part of his income which is siphoned off in taxes should be less for the man of large income than for the average."
It seems to me that his conclusion is not a sound one. Society may well be served better by a practice of high taxation of large incomes, with some of the tax money used by the government in the development of natural resources, such as in the Tennessee Valley, in the most productive way, rather than through the limited development of the natural resources, as in Hell’s Canyon, in such a way as to provide the maximum profit to the private investors. The question of the changing nature of society that would result from the transfer to a few great investors of ownership of an ever-increasing fraction of the property of the world, as would result from the policy that he describes, is one that is ignored by him.
The fact that Bridgman and I reach different conclusions through our similarly superficial attempts to analyze the extremely complex and difficult problems of society does not mean that attempts of this sort should not be made. I am grateful to Bridgman for the efforts that he is making to liberate scientists from the shackling contention that the methods of thinking that they have developed should be applied only in their own limited field, and that they should not attempt also to be good citizens. Bridgman is at the same time a great scientist and a good citizen. He has integrity, intellectual honesty, a quality that he discusses in his conclusion. This discussion leads him to make the statement that "the institution of nationalism is one that society at present expects the individual to accept without discussion. It is easy to imagine the social furor which would greet a proposal to discuss seriously the question 'Why should I be patriotic?' The word 'subversion' would often be herd in the clamor... Every one of us in this country should be re-examining our fundamental political suppositions to see how they stand up under the altered technological conditions of our times and to find ways of modifying them if it should appear desirable." I would add to this statement that would benefit from a concerted worldwide effort, on a great scale, to analyze social and political problems by application of the methods that scientists have found to be effective in the attack on scientific problems.
