Mr. William H. Stiles
Science Editor
News Office
Harvard University
Cambridge 38, Massachusetts
Dear Mr. Stiles:
In answer to your letter of 27 August (the answer is delayed because I have been in Europe during the past six weeks), I am glad to tell you that, so far as I can remember, I first used the term "molecular disease" in print in a paper that I published, together with Drs. Itano, Singer, and Wells, in Science, 110, 543 (1949). This paper was on sickle-cell anemia. Unfortunately, the reprints are exhausted.
I enclose some reprints in which reference is made to this work.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:JH

Dr. R. R. Williams
297 Summit Avenue
Summit, New Jersey
Dear Dr. Williams:
I have been disturbed to read your letter of 20 August, about my book No More War!.
You say that you have the feeling that I have exaggerated both the extent and certainty of radiation damage to the world population from a nuclear test. I think that if you will compare what I have written with the statements made in the report of the United Nations committee you will find that my statements are in essentially complete agreement with the statements of this committee, which, I think, have to be taken as the most authoritative of the statements made so far.
I must say that I resent your including in your letter a statement to the effect that I have followed the communist party line, inasmuch as this is a statement that, if made in public, would render you subject to a libel suit. If you had said that I follow the Christian line - that is, that what I advocate is what Christ has advocated, I would agree with you. It is clear, however, that I do not follow the communist party line; communist Russia, together with all other nations in the world, relies upon force, and opposes justice and morality as the basis for settlement of disputes between nations.

Dear Bob:
I have found your letter of 28 August awaiting me when my wife and I returned from our European trip, four days ago.
I should be glad to have some advice from you about what I should do next. At the present time it seems to me that there is essentially no chance that the United Nations would take action about setting up a new agency, the World Peace Research Organization, and I am not sure that it would be best for this to be done, in any case.
What do you think of the idea that the World Peace Research Organization be set up first as a non-governmental international organization, with private support, and that, later on, the effort be made to get the United Nations to recognize the World Peace Research Organization, perhaps in the way of allowing the Organization to have a representative in the Assembly, with the privilege of taking part in discussions but probably not of voting?
Also, I should like to know what you would have in the way of advice for me about raising funds. I think that it would be wise to aim for something like $100,000,000—I think that the senior people who are appointed to the organization should have life appointments, and accordingly something like $1,000,000 endowment (with the principal expendable also) would be needed for each of the senior people, to cover his salary, assistants and perhaps laboratories, and overhead. I think that the start on raising the money ought to be made in the United States. I am looking forward to the job of attacking the U.S.S.R., and finding out what the possibilities of raising money by public subscription in that country are. Perhaps the Russian Academy of Sciences could make the contributions from behind the iron curtain.
Also, you might well have a suggestion to make about the place where the organization should be located. It should not be in one of the nuclear countries. I think that it should be in a place where conditions for living are good, and life is pleasant, in order that this feature might help to attract people. What do you think of a spot in the country ten or twenty miles from Rome? Perhaps you can suggest an alternative.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:JH

Dr. Linus Pauling, Jr.
3909 Round Top Drive Honolulu, T.H.
Dear Linus:
Mama and I got back from Europe five days ago, and we are starting on an Eastern trip tomorrow. I am going to speak at Massachusetts General Hospital, and also at Harvard Medical School, the latter talk being to the medical students in Nu Sigma Nu fraternity. Then we go to Princeton for a three-day meeting of the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, and to McGill University for a talk to the Chemical Institute of Canada, and we shall come home next Thursday.
Everything went along very well in Europe. We had a fine time.
We are pleased indeed to have the invitation from you and Anita to come to visit you at Christmas time. I think that I shall plan to look into the research program on mental deficiency that is being started up by Dick Lippman and President Snyder. I understand that President Snyder himself will be one of the principle investigators, and that the Public Health Service is almost sure to make the grant for support of the work.
Linda's little babies are developing very well. They are very cute little boys.
I spoke to the University Students Association in Oslo and also in Trondheim, while we were in Norway, and gave several other talks about nuclear warfare and the need for a World Peace Research Organization. It looks to me as though I am committed now to do some more work along these lines. I have decided that probably the way in which the World Peace Research Organization could be got started is to have it set up as a private, non-governmental international organization, and then later to ask the United Nations to recognize it, perhaps allowing it to have a representative in the Assembly of the United Nations, along with the representatives of the governments. I have been trying to decide where the organization might be located. I thought at first that it would be nice to have it on the coast of California, perhaps a few miles south of Monterey. However, everyone seems to think that it would be a great handicap to plan to have it in the United States or in Russia, probably also in Great Britain or France. At the present time it seems to me that a possible site is in the hills ten or twenty miles away from Rome. I think that it should be in a place where people would like to live, especially academic people. Do you have any suggestions to make? I think that Switzerland probably
[Page 2]
should be ruled out on the ground that there are too many United Nations organizations and other International organizations already located in Switzerland.
Mommie and I hope that you will be able to stop by and see us, also Anita, during your trips. We shall be back home on Friday 17 October. We are planning to go up to the ranch sometime later in October, and we leave on Thursday 6 November for a two-weeks trip, getting back home approximately Saturday 22 November. We do not have any other trips away from home, except to the ranch, scheduled at present, until June, 1959, when we expect to go to Europe.
Mommie and I are both in good health. Peter seems to be well pleased with his new job.
Much love from
Dictated by Dr. Pauling

22 October 1958
Mr. Leon J. Ricks
2820 Maiden Lane
Altadena, California
Dear Mr. Ricks:
I have been interested to read your letter of 20 October, in which you suggest that some work might be done on hypnosis as a way of preventing aging of human beings.
I have some interest in the problem of aging—I would like to know what the basic mechanism is. However, I have not thought of anything very original, and it seems unlikely that I shall get any work done in this field.
I know little about hypnosis, and do not feel qualified to comment on your suggestion. I may say that I should think that it would be difficult to use hypnosis in such a way as to interfere with the aging process and not at the same time cause other interferences.
With respect to your getting someone to carry out the experiments that you have in mind, I may give you some general advice. Scientists and medical men who are carrying on research usually are full of ideas of their own, which, for practical reasons, they have difficulty in carrying out. It is hard to find one who is in a position to devote time and effort to working on ideas proposed by someone else. There are commercial laboratories that make investigations requested by someone else, and also financially supported. However, I do not know any commercial laboratory that would be especially suited to doing the work that you have in mind.
I was interested to learn that your sister Louise has four children now, and is living in Washington. Peter is now Lecturer in chemistry in the University of London. He is married, and has one small son.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:JH

Dear Peter and Julia:
Mama and I got home safely. We had only a few days here before we want back east, where everything went along all right. We haven't gone to the ranch yet—I think that we shall go up next Wednesday, returning the following Monday. Linda is getting along well. The twins are doing very well, they are lively and vigorous. I have been having a hard time catching up on my collected mail. I have also been getting some work done on the revision of The Nature of the Chemical Bond.
I enclose a check for $1,000, for the next few months. What has happened about the little piece of property?
Love from
Linus Pauling

27 October, 1958
Dear Daddy,
We are certainly pleased to have you with us and hope you will come back again. We shall have a new bed for you.
Would you please ask Freeman to send to me one copy each of:
General Chemistry, College Chemistry, College Chemistry in the Laboratory by Malm and Frantz, A Laboratory Study of Chemical Principles by Harper W. Frantz, Introductory Quantitative Analysis by Olson, Orlemann and Koch?
I need them in the laboratory. I am disappointed with the course here, though perhaps I should be careful. There seems to me to be very little teaching, though it is true that the British method is one of sink or swim by the student himself.
If it is convenient, would you please sign a copy of the American edition of No More War and send it to a friend of mine Dr. Mustafa Hassan in this laboratory? He is a Sudanese boy whom I have known for the past two years and who worries a great deal about humanity and the world. He worries too much I feel.
Linus Junior has written to us and we are very excited about the possibility of coming home and to Hawaii for Christmas. I have asked Professor Ingold and he seems to think it is all right, so we shall leave here the 10th or 11th December and I must be back by Monday the 12th January I think, unless I have some good scientific reason for being longer. I do not know whether it would be advisable to stay longer.
Thank you very much for the book Regular Polytopes which has arrived.
Much love from
Peter

Aging
Someone has told me recently that some Englishman published a paper some time ago, perhaps a few years ago and perhaps in the Biochemical Journal, about the amount of aspartic acid and glutamic acid in the protein elastin, in relation to age of the animal. According to the statement to me, the amount of these two dicarboxylic amino acids is supposed to increase with increasing age—that is, the amount present in this particular protein.
I feel some doubt about this statement, but I thought that I would pass it on to you.
