Dear Mom,
As Christmas came and went I remembered how enjoyable last year's was. It certainly was fun to be surrounded by so much family and so much Christmas spirit. This year, being occupied by settling into the new house and getting things to work smoothly, we had a very simple holiday. Next year I hope we can again think of assembling the multitudes.
I thank you very much for all of your Christmas gifts. The children's packages were really ingenious, although I think we enjoyed the wrapping more than they did. However, in order to balance things off, they enjoyed the contents more than we did. Anita especially liked the pine branches and cones, as she is presently interested in Japanese flower arrangement.
The weather here fortunately turned cold for Christmas so we had fires going day in and day out for several weeks. Nothing helps more to make Christmas seem appropriate than bad weather and a blazing yule log. My only regret is that we did not get around to making Christmas pudding and supreme sauce to go along with it.
Having found your letter of May 11,1957, I enclose a check for all that I owe (I think). This is tabulated below:
Outdated check to Peter Pauling $160.00
Telephone bill 13.48
Diaper Service 6.00
Chemical dishes 15.00
Total $194.48
I hope this is right.
House and garden are coming along slowly but surely. Perhaps by your next visit the planting will be in full swing. I am emphasizing many plants you are familiar with-azaleas, ajuga, trachelospermum, and fuchias. Incidentally, the camellia seedlings from you that I smuggled in are growing well. It is too soon to tell though whether they will flower true.
My office is proceeding apace. Now all I need are some patients. However, I am told one must be patient oneself for at least a year.
Best wishes and much love to everyone. I hope it will not be long before you will visit Honolulu. How is the ranch?
Love,
Linus
