  I am pleased to have your letter of 18 September – I have been up at the ranch for some time, and have just seen the letter.

  I believe that it would be well worth while for us to think seriously about the possible use of injections of nucleic acid, as discussed in my letter of 9 September.

  Your first question is about possible immunological reactions. Benoit began his injections when the ducks were young, usually only one or two weeks old, but in some cases he continued the injections for several months. He did not report any immunological reactions. I do not think that any would be expected. There is no information in Landsteiner’s book about antigenic action of nucleic acid. I would not expect nucleic acid preparations to be antigenic, and I doubt that there is anything to worry about. The nucleic acid preparations should be free of protein. There has been much work done in recent years on the chemical methods to be used in preparing nucleic acid – the job would have to be carefully done.

  I do not know how much sperm would be needed. I doubt that there is any way to find out except by trial. Probably it would be worth while to begin some work on animals, to see whether injection of nucleic acid could control an inborn error of metabolism.

  I suggest that the four of us have a discussion one of these days about this proposed investigation.

  I think that Dr. Lippman has the agenda for the meeting on 10 October in good order. The results about senile plaque formations in brains of mongoloid patients, reported by Dr. Celeris, seem very interesting.

  Mama and I, as we drove home from the ranch where we have been ten days, a couple of days ago talked about the pleasure that we had in seeing you again and having you present at Linda's wedding. We were sorry that Anita could not have been there too.

  While we were at the ranch I put in a couple of days digging out the spring (a local boy was working for us, and did most of the work), and then putting in a brick and concrete water box in place of the old wooden water box. The old box had got almost completely filled with roots from the Monterey cypresses. We are going to try to keep the roots out of the new box. I was interested to see that the spring consists of a hole, about 4 inches in diameter, that goes back in a stratum of blue clay. I measured the flow of water, and found it to be about 2000 gallons per day.

  I enclose herewith a copy of Research Reviews of the Office of Naval Research, containing an article on the flying sailboat, that you might be interested in. I remember that in an earlier issue there was a report on a flying motorboat, but I no longer have this issue.

  The research program on the possibility of causing a patient or animal to manufacture missing enzymes by injecting nucleic acid is still under discussion. Dr. Tarjan seems to be very much interested in trying it out. I should like to see some animal work done, but I have not yet discovered in the literature a description of satisfactory inborn errors of metabolism in animals. Dr. Lippman has suggested that we might make use of albino mice, inasmuch as the manufacture of pigment is determined by a single enzyme, missing in the albinos, and that nucleic acid from pigmented mice-or, rather, rats, with which we are more experienced-might lead to pigmentation. I think that we shall try this out, but in the meantime I am continuing to look for reported inborn errors in metabolism in animals. We have not yet decided about trying nucleic acid injections on phenylketonuric or galactosemic patients.

  On my return to Pasadena after nearly three months in Europe, I find that you have now retired, and that I no longer shall have the pleasure of seeing you at work in the Instrument Shop of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the California Institute of Technology, and of occasionally talking with you about the progress of the work.

  I feel that much of the credit for the excellent work done by people in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the Institute has to be given to the excellence of the apparatus with which they work, and accordingly that it comes back to you. I do not know whether this feeling has been expressed in words very often, but I am sure that you have recognized that it exists.

  Let me express to you, on my own behalf and also on the behalf of my colleagues in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the thanks of the Division for your valuable and effective collaboration over the past 27 years, and our best wishes to you for the years to come.

  Dear Professor Ewing:

  I am not sure that I have understood your letter of 9 October, in which you say that Hopkins-Bailar classify scandium as IIIB. I do not see how scandium can be put in the IIIB group, inasmuch as gallium is clearly the element in IIIB, in the first long period.

  The general question that you ask as to why chemists do not get together and work out a compromise periodic chart so that books could be uniform can, I think, be answered. The periodic chart is rather arbitrary. For example, some authors show a periodic chart in which the short groups are split, usually after group II. There is in fact no reason for introducing a split in the short groups, and I have avoided having to do so, and having to decide to put the split after group II or group III, by having the short groups extend over the whole of the periodic table. The labeling of the groups is, of course, arbitrary, and arguments can be thought up on both sides of each question. Presumably in the course of time there will be a trend toward one or another of the forms of the periodic table now in use, but it may take some decades for the trend to become so definite as to lead to a universally used periodic table.

  Dear Academician Nesmeyanov:

  I thank you very much for your letter of 28 August, which had to be forwarded to me after it had been returned to you from Oslo. I am glad to have your letter, and the expression of your opinion that your statement and the one that my colleagues and I have signed asking that an international agreement be reached to stop nuclear tests have a common spirit and a common objective.

  I am writing now to ask you if it would be possible for you to help me attain another objective. I have decided to try to get signatures from scientists in all of the member countries of the United Nations to our appeal to the governments and people of the world to stop the testing of nuclear weapons.

  I am now sending letters to scientists in these countries. I do not, however, have reliable information about the leading scientists in the countries of the Soviet Union, and for this reason I am appealing to you.

  I enclose 20 copies of the appeal, and 20 copies of a letter that I have written, to be sent with the appeal to a leading scientist in each nation.

  May I ask you if it would be possible for you and Academician Topchiev to select a leading scientist in each of the member nations of the Soviet Union, and to send to him one copy of my letter and one copy of the appeal, in the hope that he and other scientists in his nation will sign the appeal and send the names of the signers to me.

  It is my belief that the appeal with the signatures of scientists from the majority of the nations of the world will have a significant influence on public opinion all over the world, and I shall be grateful to you for your help in obtaining these signatures.

  I should be glad also to have your opinion as to whether the statement in your letter would justify me in saying that the 186 scientists who are listed in the letter have signed my appeal. If you think that this is not justified, would you consider the possibility of obtaining some signatures to the appeal, and sending them to me?

  I am glad to take this opportunity of expressing to you and the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. the sincere thanks of my wife and me for the opportunity of taking part in the International Symposium on the Origin of Life in Moscow, and of visiting many scientific laboratories in Moscow, Leningrad, and Dubno, and becoming better acquainted with Soviet scientists.

Julia and I had our first shots, but they were so long ago that they are wasted now. If you cannot please say so, so that I can tell the doctor to try elsewhere.

  Please send $10 to Dr. S.A. Bernhard, Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda 14, Maryland. He gave it me. Tell daddy to subtract from income.
