1 November 1956
Dear Mamma,
Thank you for your letter.
The Home Office has not yet acted on my application to reside here for a further year. I
thought they would agree.
I have not heard from the draft board. All their communications pens through you. I
keep them informed of my status and demand deferment regularly.
The cost via the pole for the family is ~$1110 and via New York - $1054, a saving of
$56, which seems to me not enough to make the trip worthwhile.
I have not checked into the Visa yet. I would much prefer we come together, though the
visa business may be so complicated that Julia will have to arrive by the 30th November, I cannot
come that early.
Thank you for the Audio, the 2nd has arrived.
(XXXOOO)! Love, Peter

Saturday
Dear Mom
We think it would be a fine idea for Pete and Julia and what-ever-his-name-is to join the family at Christmas. Why don't you contribute what you can and we'll make up the difference for their fares, and it will be a gift from the whole family. The arrangements can be handled from either end.
Sunday
Your letter arrived yesterday afternoon. The pictures of the ranch look wonderful--it looks like just the right kind of place. Not nearly as ramshackle as I was led to believe, though. We are very anxious to see it. The pictures I am returning now, since if they hang around here no one knows what will happen to them. I also enclose a couple of slides of our house, taken a week or so apart in October. By now the corrugated iron roof is over this section, but the house is still far from complete.
Since you will be gone on your lecture tour with Pop for a while I am going to write Pete telling him of our present so that he can make plans for leaving. Time is getting rather short, and he will have a number of arrangements to make.
We're looking forward to our California trip very very much. We'll be glad to see you.
Incidentally, I see Linda in one of the pictures. I didn't even know she was home. I'll be glad to see her, too, especially since we have had practically no communication for two years.
Much love,
Linus

Dear Miss Mitchum:
I return under separate cover the book Bahai World Faith, that you left for me.
I am sorry to say that I have not been able to get interested in it. The whole thing seems to me to be too indefinite. Nevertheless, I have been pleased to have the opportunity of hearing what the book is like, and I thank you for bringing it over.
Sincerely yours,

10 November 1956
Dear Mamma & Daddy,
Thank you for your letter of the 5th Nov. & for the cheque, which of shall keep for the
present.
The term here ends the 12th Dec & begins the 9th Jan, & I could be a few days late, so physically I could be a month.
As to my worth to the Institute, I am fairly sure that John Kendrew or David Green or
llie Arndt would come for a month on the same terms, and they know more about many things
than I. I pay attention to technical details, but he Ullie has built a county spectrometer & two
rotating anode x-ray tubes.
Getting stuff done at Caltech briefly involves persuading Holmes, and while I may have a
better chance of doing that than most, I do not know that I could manage much.
I am quite willing to come & quite willing to work as hard as I can & do as much as I
can. Still, I do not know that this is not a racket, and I do not see that I should have to decide
whether it is or not. I think it is up to the Department to decide whether they want me, though I
am willing to do what I can.
Otto Bastinsen has just shown up to see Katie Lonsdale. I shall take him home
tomorrow. Julie has a cold & sore throat, poor girl.
Much love,
Peter

Dear Peter:
I am writing to ask if you could accept an appointment with us for one month, beginning 1 December or as soon thereafter as possible. Professor Corey and I would like to have some advice about apparatus for obtaining the collection of intensities from protein crystals. We hope to have crystals in a few months, and to set out on the job of collecting the intensities. We are not interested in doing it in an ideal way - that is, we need to have advice about how to use our present apparatus, and what we should do to amplify our methods.
Also, I should like to discuss with you the work that you began on solid solutions some time ago, and find out what your ideas are about the structure of metals and alloys.
We propose to give you appointment for the month as Research Assistant, with salary $350. Also, we can, from one of our funds, reimburse you for your own traveling expenses to Pasadena and return to London.
I hope that you can accept this appointment. I know that the holidays come during the proposed time, but I am planning to talk with you enough during the holidays to make up for this fact.
Mama and I have just returned from an eleven-day trip to the northwest, the five northwest sections of the American Chemical Society have formed a region, with the idea of inviting speakers to address the five sections, and I have served as the first of these regional speakers. We saw Aunt Elizabeth in Spokane. Also we saw Crellin in Portland, as well as Richard Morgan, who is the elder son of my cousin Richard Morgan. We drove to Spokane along route 395, through Burns, Oregon, also Condon, Oregon. We returned by way of Salem, Albany, Bend, and then down to route 395.
We are having the ceremonies of dedicating the new laboratory this week. Mama and I have picked out some new furniture - Henry Miller, which is being put in my office this afternoon. I caught a cold in Seattle, which, although it has not been bad, has caused me to decide to stay in bed today.
Much Love from

Arcata, California
Dear Dr. Spetz:
I was pleased to hear from you again.
As to our work on mental disease, I must say that at the present time we are concentrating on mental deficiency. In particular, we are making a thorough study of patients with phenylketonuria, in the hope of finding out the molecular mechanism of production of the manifestations of the disease. I doubt that we shall do anything about schizophrenia.
Please send me a copy of your paper when it is published.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,

20 November 1956
Dr. Benjamin Linsky
Air Pollution Control District
World Trade Center, The Ferry Building
San Francisco 6, California
Dear Dr. Linsky:
In answer to your letter of 7 November, I may say that I do not have any copy of my remarks which led to the Associated Press story. In fact my statement to a reporter consisted of only one or two sentences. After I had been interviewed on another subject, someone asked me about smog, and I said that medical statistics (I was quoting Professor Hardin Jones of the University of California in Berkeley) show that people who live in cities have five years less life expectancy than those who live in the country, and that I felt that air pollution was in considerable part responsible for this difference in life expectancy of five years, and that smog such as we have in Los Angeles might well be responsible for a decrease in life expenctancy [sic] of the order of magnitude of a few years.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Professor Carl M. Stevens
Department of Chemistry
State College of Washington
Pullman; Washington
Dear Professor Stevens:
I am pleased to have received your letter of 15 November. I may say that I enjoyed my visit to the northwest very much, and I am pleased that I was able to serve as the first Northwest Regional Lecturer for the group of local sections of the American Chemical Society in the Northwest.
Everything went along well on the trip. My wife
enjoyed herself, as did I. We had no trouble at all, except that the last morning, when we were still 80 miles from Pasadena and I had a lecture to give at 9 o'clock, I found at 7 o'clock that a tire was flat on my automobile. Fortunately, it was possible to change the tire, and still to get to Pasadena in time for me to give the lecture.
The following is the statement of my expenses:
Automobile mileage, 2810 miles at 8 cts/mile .... $224.80
Motel and meals for 11 days........................ 149.50
Total........................ $374.30
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

30 November 1956
Dr. and Mrs. Linus Pauling, Jr.
3909 Round Top Drive
Honolulu, T.H.
Dear Anita and Linus:
I have received from President DuBridge a copy of his letter of 27 November to you, and I am writing to express to you my thanks for this additional gift for support of the researchers that we are carrying on.
I enclose a copy of a letter that I have just sent to President DuBridge, about the disposition of the funds.
Those aspects of our program in mental disease that deal with immunological problems have been held up because we had not succeeded in obtaining funds for equipping the laboratories in the Norman W. Church building that were designed for this work. Now it seems that we can obtain a grant from the Public Health Service, on a matching basis, and I have accordingly allocated $20,000 of the money to this use. I think that it may well be that some kinds of mental disease have an immunological cause-that is, that some people may manufacture antibodies against brain proteins, causing an allergic reaction that leads to mental manifestations. I am hoping that we can obtain some evidence about this hypothesis.
You may be interested in some work that we plan to do on aging. A short while ago, while I was thinking about the possibility of getting some information about the mechanisms of protein synthesis that operate in the human body and the fact that they might not operate perfectly, and that some factory reject protein molecules might be manufactured along with the well made ones, it occurred to me that these factory reject molecules might in some cases be sticky, and that they might clamp onto reticular proteins, cell membranes, etc., in such a way as to stay in the body permanently, and ultimately to interfere with normal physiological activity. We have planned some experiments to test this hypothesis of aging, and I hope that within a year we shall have some direct experimental information as to whether the remishanism is significant or not.
We are looking forward very much to seeing you and the children later this month. Peter and his wife and baby plan to arrive about 15 December. Crellin and his wife also will arrive about 15 December. It will be fun to have such a full house. Also, we are hoping that everybody can come up to our ranch for a few days.
Much love from
Daddy
