PS. I do not really think I can live on the Porsche since I got the money for the car. I could ask
to borrow the money so I could get the degree. I am advised: It is better to buy than to rent
furnished for > one year. It is much easier to buy a flat or house than to rent one unfurnished. I
could get a mortgage on or more at 6% in Sterling itself.

Dear Dan:
I am pleased to have your letter. I hope that you will continue to write to me about once a year. I am afraid that if I were not to answer your letter now, I would never get around to answering it.
I have made some progress in revising "The Nature of the Chemical Bond," and I hope to have the job done within another year.
I should like to accept your invitation to me to lecture to your group sometime. I do not know when it will be, however. I find that I am having more and more difficulty in getting the things done that I want to do - probably largely because there are so many things that I want to do. I remember Bawn as a lively fellow.
Peter is not getting his Ph.D. in Cambridge. Also, he is married, to a Welch girl, who was a student at Girton College, and he and his wife have a baby, about a week old now. I am not sure what he plans to do during the coming year.
As to my coming to England, I have agreed to give a talk, next summer, at a meeting of the British Gelatin and Glue Research Association, at a meeting in London, but I think that it is likely that I shall stay in England for only a couple of days, because I have agreed also to spend a month in France, talking with people in the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, and also to go to a meeting in Moscow.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Doctor Linus Pauling
California Institute of Technology
Pasadena, California
Dear Doctor Pauling:
I could not fall asleep last night. I picked up this week's issue of Time, and came upon the news: a superlatively endowed individual was to labor in behalf of the ill-begotten. I felt tremulous with excitement - as I imagine people of a former age felt when they had read of a prince of the nobility, taking up the cudgels on behalf of the serfs and slaves. You are a prince of the new nobility and, by your announcement alone, you have already gifted the hopeless with the supreme gift of hope. If your efforts should culminate in fruitful achievement, you will have liberated the most oppressed minority of mankind, and redressed the most crying injustice of all, the biological; for the human tragedy is not to be born and to die, but to be born and not to grow.
There must be countless number of people all over the world who, having learned of your decision, can no longer regard you as a stranger. No matter how lonely your labors may seem at times, your laboratory will be humming at all times with the prayers of your unknown friends, well-wishers, and would-be beneficiaries. If few should have the audacity to write you, and fewer still to address you in person, they must assure you nevertheless that the news, emanating from Pasadena, transcends in importance all the screaming headlines of today.
Nor should you feel that you have but a small staff with which to do battle. You have had a vast army all along which, with weapons of their own forging, has
- 2 -
fought the enemies of indifference, penuriousness, cruelty, stupidity and ignorance, and inflamed the desire and hope for victory. Now we can rejoice: we're no longer leader-less, we've got us a general.
As a private of many years of faithful service, I stand at ease while I tell you that I anticipate some unlooked-for benefits from your research; for it may inspire some of your distinguished colleagues to tackle the obverse side of your problem; namely, how to promote that measure of mental, moral and physical excellence which, in a world of technological excellence, has become imperative.
In any event, you have caused me a happy moment which is not doomed to be swept away into the maelstrom of memory, but is destined to grow richer every day, nurtured by you and your associates. Can any man be in greater debt to his fellow man? I am glad to acknowledge it.
Sincerely yours,
Eugene J. Hochman

Hopkins Marine Station
Pacific Grove, California
Dear Mr. Sherwood:
I am pleased to have your letter of 7 September, with the interesting information about indoles, especially in relation to schizophrenia. I trust that you will continue your work on the substance that you have extracted from patients suffering from schizophrenia, and identify it without question. Probably some work should be done to see what the introduction of the substance into the blood stream does to normal individuals.
If you come to Pasadena, please let me know ahead of time, in order that we may find a suitable time for conversation. Another possibility is that you come to call on me sometime when I am at our ranch, which is 20 miles south of Lucia, on Highway 1.
Sincerely yours,

20 September 1956
Dr. Corliss Lamont
450 Riverside Drive
New York 27, New York
Dear Dr. Lamont:
Let me answer the question in the last paragraph of your letter of 10 September first. When I heard your talk about Humanism in Los Angeles a few months ago, I decided that I am a Humanist. I think that I told you at the time that your talk was a wonderfully precise and illuminating discussion of the subject. I am glad to repeat this statement now.
I am pleased that you have got a copy of my book GENERAL CHEMISTRY - I wish that I had sent it to you. I hope that you find severa [sic] sections worth reading. Have you read the chapter on biochemistry? I think that it is pretty good.
I have some trouble in answering your questions about energy and matter. I have several times tried to understand philosophy. I have never had much success. As to the statement that I made that the universe is composed of substances (forms of matter) and radiant energy, I would say that the aspects of energy that you are thinking of - latent heat of fusion, chemical energy, and so on - are included in ay category of substance. I do not think that it is sensible to say that a piece of sugar is something more than the substance sugar. It is true that the substance sugar at 25° C is different in its properties than the substance sugar at 0° C; but the differences between the two samples of matter cannot be simply attributed to something else, energy, in the sugar. Radiant energy, on the other hand, is not associated with substance, although, of course, it has mass. I have thought it worth while to restrict the word substance to those aspects of nature that have finite rest mass.
One complication that you have to worry about is that the kinetic energy of a moving body depends upon the frame of reference.
I do not feel very happy about the expression matter-energy.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dearest Mom
We are no longer at Portlock, having left that big house behind with a sigh of relief. It was a beautiful location, but the small-community social atmosphere and the inefficient house were wearing.
Right now we are living in a little rented house only one removed from the lot where our new one is a-building. The rented house is small, only one bathroom, a kitchen, livingroom, three bedrooms, and a front porch which is serving as the master bedroom at the moment. So, it's crowded. Our new house is somewhat behind schedule, being at the stage of finishing the floor joists. It has taken over 2½ months to get the masonry along to its stage of being almost finished. At any rate, it looks like our wish to be in for a big Christmas party might mot be realized, so we must postpone it for a year. By that time all the planting will be in good shape, and everything functioning well.
We were tickled pink at the news of your San Simeon ranch. It seems to me that you have been talking of such a thing ever since I can remember, so it is doubly wonderful that it has finally come to pass. Now you can cook on an all-wood-fired stove, as I seem to recall you idealized. That country it beautiful, although a bit dry. We thought pretty seriously of buying a ranch along the skyline drive about at the level of Palo Alto a couple of years ago, but it was not far enough away for a hideout and too far away to commute to from San Francisco, so we didn't. I must say I didn't like your name suggestions, though. Why don't you just call it The Chemical Bond (a name which is capable of meaning many things to many people) and let it go at that? Then you could call your horse Don Pauling's Resonance, and go tilting at windmills. Your corral, of course, would have the obvious 'The Benzene Ring' cognomen, and the windmill, 'The Alpha-helix' even if not strictly accurate, and the toilet 'The Phenylketone Kollector'.
Anyway, it is wonderful that you have it, and I hope that you are able to use it fully.
Ramona is at a tremendously charming stage, crawling all around, tremendously reactive to stimuli, and an extremely good and easy baby. The boys are all in school, and seem also to be blossoming. Linie is repeating the first grade because he wasn't mature enough to compete satisfactorily last year, and it seems to be for the better in spite of the temporary embarrassment of being in with kids he considered babies last year. Petie is in senior kindergarten, and is his usual humorous and contained self, and Chris is in junior kindergarten, making a nuisance of his constant boisterousness.
We are anxious to see Pete and his family, including John Charles Thomas Lawrence Tibbets Gregorio Pauling (I note, by the way, that Pete still refers to the poor babe as Gregorio, so I asked him why he didn't name him Gregory in the first place, or even Gregorius? Then he could be just like his old man, Gregarius Gregorius!). I've been trying to convince him (as I have been Crel) that he doesn't have to stay stuck in the illustrious ruts impressed into the earth by his Pop, but may branch off into any and all kinds of endeavor, but I don't know whether it will have any effect on either.
The older children, Linie especially, asks very often about his grandparents, talks about going swimming in the pool (he swims nicely, by the way), can pick out Pasadena on the globe, and is very interested by the fact that his parents have parents, and so on. He was reading the other day about Cyrus McCormick in one of his books, and this brought up the problem of the great-great-grandfather, a difficult concept. Anyway, we are thinking of taking a trip with the family to Pasadena next summer, if all works out well and you can put us up for a while.
Best wishes and much aloha from us all. By the way, here is an absolutely delicious recipe we've been serving for special parties:

Dear Pop
I have for a long time wanted to tell you that Anita and I wish to continue our $50,000 annual gift for a minimum of five years. It seems to me to be a very worthwhile project, and one that we have no doubts about whatsoever.
I enclose a reprint by one of the local psychologists, with whom I have occasionally worked clinically. He is very much interested in your opinion, and stops me several times a week to ask if you have a written anything. He says that what he wants to do is persuade Penfield to come and work with you, and that great things would result.
Anita and I are tremendously pleased at your San Simeon acquisition. I hope you use it and really get some rest periodically. Some months ago you wrote saying that ten more productive years remained to you, but I feel that the years can be stretched if you do not overdo to the point of exhaustion. That is the only thing that worries me about your extensive travelling--it must be tiring, in spite of all your experience and savoir-faire.
I have just finished a note to Mom telling about affairs here. We are very anxious to have you visit us in our new house, but I am afraid that it will not be done in time for a Christmas visit this year. In addition we are thinking of making a trip en famille to California next summer to pay you a visit, primarily for your grandchildren's sake in order that they may see at first hand that which they talk about so often.
If you have any comments on Sid's article, please let me know. He would be tickled to death if you wrote him directly. And I shouldn't be surprised if some day he popped in to pay a visit.
Much love
Linus

Dear Herbert:
I am glad to have your letter, and to know that you had a good trip back to New Haven. Please give our regards to Dorothy and Eleanor.
Could you check with Jim English on the matter of the pyrimadines and other substances synthesized by Treat B. Johnson? He wrote to me sane time ago that the box of chemicals would be shipped here, but it has not yet arrived. Please tell him that we would be glad to pay any expense involved in the packing and shipping.
Work on the protein structure project is moving along satisfactorily, and Corey and I are grateful to you for your help.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling
