Mr. Henry Allen Moe
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation
551 Fifth Avenue
New York, N. Y.
Dear Henry
I returned form Italy yesterday, but by the polar route, not passing through New York.
I hope that you had a good time in Pasadena.
As to the matter of the preparation of fresh water from sea water, I have not tried to keep up with developments in this field. I know that a good bit of work is being done on the problem. The method of ionic transfer through thin barriers of exchange resins has, I think, shown considerable promise. Electric power is needed for this method, as, indeed, for most of the others. The Von Kleinschmidt method of distillation by compression of the vapor, which is used in plants built by A. D. Little Company in Boston, may turn out to be as good as any. I think that the estimate of 5 cents per ton, for a very large installation, may be a reasonable one now – this is an estimate made 10 years ago, about what might be expected from the use of atomic power. At the present time fresh water costing 5 cents per ton at sea level is expensive.
We had a fine time in Italy, but I am glad to be home again. I am planning to work on revising a couple of my books, and in addition we have two new research projects that will require much attention from me.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Peter:
Here is a small, but hurry-up, job. Will you please pay the enclosed bill for a subscription to NATURE for your father, he asks. Since his subscription expires with the 30 June issue, it might be well to pay the bill as soon as you can, so he won't miss any numbers.
It has been nice to hear about you and Julia both from your folks and from the Hughes's. I hope everything is going fine. Crellin is around here every day, doing some real chemistry, and he seems to enjoy it. The Freeman Company is having its tenth birthday celebration in San Francisco this weekend, so your dad and mother are just now leaving to drive up there. They will probably return on Monday.
We haven't moved into our new building yet, because the rooms aren't ready for us yet. It takes B and G so long to get the equipment in place. We have the office furniture but no phones, buzzers, and laboratory equipment for your father. I hope we shall surely get to Church by the beginning of school.
All good wishes from Oliver and me,
Sincerely,
[Linus Pauling]

Dr. Walter A. Schmidt, President
Western Precipitation Corporation
1000 West Ninth Street
Los Angeles 15, California
Dear Walter:
Thanks very much for your letter of 3 July.
Ava Helen and I had a fine trip to Italy, where we traveled about for a month. The trip was made in order that I might give a lecture commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Amadeo Avogadro, who discovered Avogadro's Law. This ceremony was attended by President Granchi of Italy, and many other officials, as well as the leading scientists of Italy. It was a very striking affair.
I was surprised to learn, on my arrival in Italy, that I was being awarded the Order of the Republic of Italy - I was made a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit.
There is a matter that has been on my mind for some time. About a year ago you said that you would like to talk with me about something, and that you would telephone me. I have not heard from you, and now I am to be out of town for a few days - back about 10 July. I would be glad to come over to your office on almost any day that is convenient to you, if there is something that you would like to talk with me about, or perhaps you would come to Pasadena, and have lunch with me in the Athenaeum. Please telephone, if you wish to come.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,

Georgia Institute of Technology
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Bill:
Your letter of 6 June arrived while we were in Italy, where I was giving a lecture on Avogadro, in connection with a commemorative ceremony, and also speaking before local sections of the Italian Chemical Society.
As to Dr. R. F. Bacher, I may say that I think that he would be a first-rate president of Georgia Tech. He has a very good personality, and is in my opinion unusually well suited to administrative work - he is thoughtful and reliable in his administrative decisions. It seems to me that he resembles Dr. DuBridge, President of the California Institute of Technology, in his personal characteristics and his suitability to university administration.
As to whether he would be interested in the position, I am not able to say. He is Chairman of the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy in the Institute here, and he may feel satisfied with this job - I, for example, do not want to have any other job than the one that I have now, and Bacher may feel the same way. However, I think, judging from his activities during recent years, that he does not have the deep interest in research that I have. His work as chairman of the division here is almost entirely administrative - no teaching, and only rather general supervision of a research program, on the electron synchrotron. If the possibilities of Georgia Tech seemed to him to be great enough, he might be attracted to the job.
Another man that you might want to consider is Harrison Brown. He is Professor of Geochemistry here. He has written a book, "The Challenge of Man's Future," on a popular subject, and he writes a special page for the Saturday Review of Literature. He has also published a book in his own field of geochemistry. He is an unusually personable fellow,
Dr. Eberhardt

who is apt, I think, to end up as a university president. His original training was in chemistry, at Berkeley, and then
was in the atomic energy work during the war. His wife is an extraordinary person, with interests of her own. She is a
granddaughter of William Jennings Bryan.
How are things going with you? We have made some big changes in our undergraduate curriculum, and if you come to Pasadena at sometime you might be interested to check up on them.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

16 July, 1956
Dear Mamma and Daddy,
Thank you for sending off the letters and the cheques. I am not sure I shall be admitted, but we shall see.
I have now been granted permission to reside until the end of September in the United Kingdom, and I think this means we have won. Though they might balk if I suddenly decided to settle in this country, having a wife and son who are British subjects and decided I am not so bad as to require immediate removal from the sacred shores would I expect allow me complete freedom to stay. I think shall not, however.
I have written to the Transport people and shall send the papers to you. The Porsche should arrive in about five weeks. Thank you for doing this. I shall write to Crellin with some advice the local embassy treasury attaché gave me. Presumably you asked that the value of the car be determined by an official treasury valuer upon the arrival of the car in Los Angeles.
Thank you for the present for Julia. I have promised her a washing machine which is what she wanted. I also gave her some little ear rings. Her parents have given her nothing as yet, not even a letter. I am a little sad.
We are thinking of names. The Stowes just named their brat Mark.
I have written to McCullough and have received his answer. He thinks it should not be too difficult to get in. The deadline is August 1 this year. He states that it will take probably three years to get the degree, though the residence requirement is two, and if this is the case I think I shall not do it. That means that I shall have been a university student for twelve years with nothing to show for it except a lousy Ph.D., and I will not do it. Besides, I doubt I can afford it. I shall write to him and ask him further on this. I can get the degree here in England in two without doing anything except working in Bernals lab doing what Jack Dunitz and Leslie Orgel tell me to, and what I wish to do myself. Hot stuff on the rare earth field. I shall however, continue the application. It seems foolish to spend three more years.
The alternative is to take papa’s job and to do sufficiently well to make a name for myself in a year or two to be in a position to get a further appointment somewhere. The job offered is not really one in which to make names, but through a friendship with the departments I might be allowed to take some photographs. I do not see how I can spend three years on it. It is just too long. I cannot afford even. I shall have two kids by then, I shall need household goods and junk. Besides, course work is fun, but I want to do some structure work.
Much love from
Peter

Dear Peter:
I hesitate to burden you with an extra job, but I should like to have a copy of the book AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ELECTRONIC THEORY OF VALENCY, J. C. Speakman, Edward Arnold, Ltd., London, 3rd edition, 1955, 10 shillings 6 pence. I should be grateful to you if you would send it to me.
Everything is going along well here. Dr. Corey and his group have the microfocus x-ray tube operating, and are now working on cameras for it.
The Ford Foundation made the grant to us for support of work on mental deficiency. I am anxious to get some more work started on this problem; at present we have only one kind of investigation under way.
Mama has not been feeling very well, having caught the chest cold that has been going around. However, she seems to be getting better now. Today she has been making apricot jam, because our apricot tree is full of ripe fruit. We have had great amounts of plums, many of which have been eaten by the birds or have fallen on the ground.

Constants
Linus Pauling
I am revising my book THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND, and I am writing to ask you for advice about the values of the physical constants.
Has anything new and significant been done about the physical constants during the last couple of years? I have the compilation that you sent me a couple of years ago. Unless you advise otherwise, I plan to use the values of the physical constants that you give in this compilation.
Do not trouble to answer this note unless something has happened during the last couple of years - if I do not hear from you, I shall assume that your compilation of a couple of years ago is the one for me to use.

July 22nd
Dear Mamma,
I had a lovely birthday. Thank you very much for your letter and gift. I suppose I ought
to save it to set up our happy home in California, but I am sure I will think of too many other
things to do with it. Actually I had at least three birthday parties. Peter took me to Soho for
dinner and to a film the Observer described as "perfect," on the day, then the next day my
neighbour gave me a tea-party, and some days later Mrs. [Jonckheere] invited us for supper. I
think this is doing quite well, even for a twenty first birthday. Peter gave me some wonderful
earrings, long ones of a white stone rather like moonstone.
I had rather decided on Jennifer for a girl too, but Peter was being most uncooperative
about this business of names. He was insisting on "Gregorio" or "Plug-up" (a character out of a
very pointless space-fiction strip cartoon) every time I suggested anything reasonable. He has
been won round to Jennifer more or less I think. I cannot decide definitely for a boy though.
You have to consider the possible abbreviations and nicknames too, and I don't like "Tony" too
well. By next week I should have my [?], which will be one good thing done.
The baby is getting pretty obstreperous these days, and I am tired very quickly with the
housework and so on. But we hope to see some plays in the next two weeks, as this season
which is now ending is said to be exceptionally good. We saw one, called Look back in anger,"
last Friday which was certainly very entertaining, clever and good theatre.
Love and thanks again to you and Papa,
Julia

Mr. Fred B. Eiseman, Jr.
Chairman, Science Department
John Burroughs School
755 South Price Road
Clayton
St. Louis 24, Missouri
Dear Mr. Eiseman:
On my return to Pasadena from a European trip I hare found your letter of 31 May.
As to the question as to whether or not it might be worth while to publish some of the material described in Section III, I would say that it may be that the Journal of Chemical Education would be interested in a short description of this experiment. I would suggest that you restrict the discussion pretty largely to the successful experiment, with 20 helixes, and describe a little more definitely how the helixes were suspended randomly. The editor of the Journal would, of course, make the decision about publication.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Electrode
It has occurred to me that it might be possible to make an electrode that would measure the concentration of cyanide ion, and to use this electrode to determine the endpoint in the cyanide titration of ferrihemoglobin.
The electrode that I have in mind is similar to the calomel electrode. You might look in the literature, to see what you can find, about the use of the calomel electrode to determine chloride ion concentration.
The proposed cyanide electrode would consist of liquid mercury, in contact with a wire; solid mercurous cyanide, and solution. I do not know whether the solubility of mercurous cyanide is small enough to permit such an electrode to function.
