  • Letter from LP to Jerry Donohue, Cavendish Laboratory, RE: Writes that he is cross checking values pertaining to the protein alpha-helix. LP then goes on to say that he is satisfied with the structure for nucleic acids he has developed, except for the fact that the phosphates are packed too tightly in the middle and would be better fit on the outside. He emphasizes that this is especially important due to the relative weakness of the hydrogen bonds holding the molecule together. He also mentions that he has recommended that the Guggenheim Foundation increase the grants awarded, which will benefit Donohue. [Filed under LP Science: 9.001].

  • Letter from Peter Pauling to LP and AHP RE: Discusses nucleic acid structure: "We still feel that the structure requires sodium, and somewhere near the oxygens, whose negative charge must be cancelled, to hold the molecule together. We agree that everything is a little tight... Actually, it is thought at the Cavendish that the structure is pretty good. We have nothing better to offer."
