Location: Pasadena, CA

  • Letter from LP to Jerry Donohue, Cavendish Laboratory, RE: Writes that he is cross checking values pertaining to the protein alpha-helix. LP then goes on to say that he is satisfied with the structure for nucleic acids he has developed, except for the fact that the phosphates are packed too tightly in the middle and would be better fit on the outside. He emphasizes that this is especially important due to the relative weakness of the hydrogen bonds holding the molecule together. He also mentions that he has recommended that the Guggenheim Foundation increase the grants awarded, which will benefit Donohue. [Filed under LP Science: 9.001].
  • Letter from LP to Dr. G. E. Burch Re: Glad to hear that Dr. Burch has a replacement for Dr. Coppedge. Has encouraged Dr. Itano to delay his visit, as he has found some new evidences concerning methemoglobinemia therapy of sickle cell anemia. [letter from Dr. Burch 1-1-53] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #24: File 8.5].

Shilling of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Dept. of the Navy RE: congratulates him on his being given the founder's medal by the Association of Military Surgeons. Goes on to discuss his upcoming speech at the Academy in Washington on the structure of proteins.
  • LP writes cheque to: E. Crellin Pauling amount: $35.00
  • Letter from LP to Dave Shoemaker of MIT RE: in response to Prof. Shoemaker's letter of request, writes that he will be available to talk with him and Dr. Hymin Shapiro at the ACS meeting in March. Todd of U. of Cambridge to LP RE: Brings up LP's letter in reference to the structure of nucleic acids, referring also to "Bragg and Cochran" and nucleotide examination. [letter from LP to Prof. A. Todd 5-12-52, letter from LP to Prof. Todd 2-19-53] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #330, file: (Todd, A. R.)].
