  • Letter from LP to Professor H.H. Weber, Physiologisches Institut, RE: Would be pleased to speak as much as possible on the upcoming trip to Europe to participate in a protein conference. Mentions his intentions of purchasing an automobile with AHP and touring Europe in it. States that he has not been working on the protein problem for the past two months, but has instead concentrated on the structure of nucleic acids.     • Letter from LP to himself RE: relays how he talked on the phone the previous day with Pierce of the Rosenberg Committee and agreed to have his name mentioned in an advertisement to appear in the Daily News. However, in the actual publication, CIT was mentioned which LP asked not to occur.
    • Letter from F.C. Lindvall, CIT, to LP RE: Writes that Lee DuBridge believes that it is advantageous to have members of the contracts committee cleared for classified proposals. [Note dated 1-9-53 by LP: States that Lindvall stated orally that no classified information had come to the committee since the Vista Project, and that LP's lack of classified clearance did not interfere].

    • The January issue of the Federation of American Scientists Newsletter is released. A penciled handwritten note reads "We regretted that we couldn't give greater coverage to these hearings - D.H.". This pertains to a short story regarding the Cox committee investigation of foundation support of "subversive activity". Quoted in the article is Henry Allen Moe of the Guggenheim Foundation saying that there is a "correlation between academic eminence and political naivete". [Filed under LP Science: 14.017].

Burch to LP RE: Asks that LP help defer Dr. Richard Coppedge from active duty in the Reserves through July 1, as they need his assistance in pushing their program in their clinical investigations.     • Letter from Peter Pauling to LP and AHP RE: Discusses his Christmas in England and future travelling plans. Goes on to say the following: "We all think you are hopping mad at Nature and rightly so. Evidently John and Francis finally got Bragg to write a letter to the editor telling him to get off the pot. But I guess by then he had already published. I was told a story today. You know how children are threatened 'You had better be good or the bad ogre will come and get you'. Well, for more than a year Francis and others have been saying to the nucleic acid people at Kings 'You had better work hard or Pauling will get interested in nucleic acids'."
