Prof. R. E. Rundle

Dear Bob:
Froudenberg has just been here, and he made some statements about the starch-iodine complexes that seem unlikely to me. I then checked a paper by F. Cramer, Ber. 84, 855 (1951), in which he says that x-ray photographs of α-dextrin-iodine show that the iodine atoms are in a straight chain, with distance 3.06 A. He does not give any data, nor any justification for this statement.
I believe that you and I talked about this matter some time ago. My own opinion, of course, is that the value 3.06 A represents an average iodine-iodine distance, and that in fact the atoms are doubled up into molecules, with bond distance 2.7 A, and no-bond (weak-bond) distance 3.4 A. The latter is short enough to give a pronounced interaction between molecules, which could explain the large extinction coefficient.
What do you think the facts are? Do you feel that you have data requiring the atoms to be equidistant, or that Cramer's work is reliable?
I am very busy with some new protein structures. Things seem to be working out rather well in this field.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Arne:
I am writing to tell you that the remainder of the trip that Ava Helen and I made to Europe turned out very well, and to thank you again for your assistance in getting my passport.
We spent one month in England. I visited most of the laboratories in which x-ray work on protein structure is being done, and talked with most of the people who are doing such work. In this way I made up, I think, for the failure to attend the Royal Society meeting in May - at any rate, so far as I myself am concerned, in that the doubts that some of these people had about the correctness of our protein structures were strongly expressed to me during my visits with them.
As a result, I concentrated on the problem of explaining the difficulties, and fortunately was able to find what seems to be a satisfactory solution. Professor Corey and I have written a brief statement about this work, and it will be published soon in NATURE. I think that the new structures - which represent only slight changes, but still significant ones, of our original α-keratin structure - are very interesting, and I am hoping that we shall find some biological materials have still more complex aggregates of the α helix, such as a cable composed of nineteen α helices twisted about one another.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Stockholm next summer; perhaps also in Brussels in the spring.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Sir Thomas Taylor
University College of the West Indies
Mona, St. Andrew
Jamaica, B.W.I.
Dear Taylor:
I was pleased to learn in England, and also from your letter, which was awaiting us when we returned, about
your new job at University College at Exeter. I think that this should be fine, although Ava Helen and I are very disappointed to think that we shall now lose out on the opportunity of coming to Jamaica.
Corey and I have just sent off another paper on
the proteins, to be published in NATURE in a month or so. We
have verified that the α helix (our 3.7-residue helix) is pre-
sent in hair and horn related proteins, but have found
that their structures are somewhat more complicated, in that
there are cables, 30 A. in diameter, present in these fibers,
these cables being formed by twisting six α helixes around a
central one.
We are hoping to come to England again next summer, on our way to the International Congress in Stockholm, and perhaps we shall meet again at that time.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Sutton of Magdalen College, Oxford to LP RE: writes that their project for compiling a list of inter-atomic distances from x-ray crystallographic examination has made progress. Mentions Jerry Donohue and Dorothy Hodgkin in making an analysis on a number of organic compounds. Asks LP if the idea of limiting the list to only molecular crystals is a good one. Also enquires as to whether LP might consider a former pupil, Dr. L.E. Orgel, for work at Caltech. 22 October 1952
Dear Peter:
We were glad to have your letter, which arrived yesterday, just before I sent my letter off to you.
Mama wants to know if you have met Crick? You did not mention him in your letter.
Also, as to your curtains: will you check the dimensions and let us know. You say in your letter two windows 6’ 6” high, 50” and 37” wide respectively, in other words four curtains each 48” wide. Mama thinks that you probably mean four curtains each 36” wide. It would be hard to get the wider material.
Also, would you write us as to the exact points between which the vertical dimensions are measured. What is the distance from, say, the top of the window frame (or some other exactly specified locus) to the floor, and also to the bottom of the window frame? Mama thinks that probably the curtains should reach all the way to the floor, but in any case they should extend from the top of the window frame to the bottom of the window frame (if you have window frames), or from a point a little below the opening at the bottom. She suggests that one of your old curtains might serve for one of the windows, and that she would then have to make only a pair for the larger window.
I sympathize with you about the bed. I remember sleeping on a bed which had a two by four across under my ear; it was not very comfortable.
As to Jim Watson’s pay, 110 pounds a month, that amounts to $3660 a year. I suppose that he may have to pay some or all of his traveling expenses to Pasadena out of it, or he may have a special grant for travel. The rate $3600 per year is the one that we used for first-year post-doctorate people up till last year. Now we pay, in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, $4000 (under ordinary circumstances) to a first-year post-Ph.D., and increase the sum by $200 a year or $300 a year the next year. The average stipend for Ph.D.’s from this Institute in their first jobs last year was, as I remember, $5700, the high being about $7500 (perhaps one man got more – I am quoting these figures from memory). The high salaries, of course, came from industry. It is evident that it is worth while financially to complete the work for the doctorate in three years, if possible, because of the great difference in income of a post-doctoral fellow and a man working for his doctor’s degree.
You might consider it worth while to wear woolen underwear. I had intended to turn over some of mine (in part inherited from Fred Ewing) to you, but our absence from home when you left prevented it. Why don’t you buy one suit and try it out? I think that it makes a great difference.
How much would it cost in postage for you to send copies of the Times and the New Statesman on to us – perhaps saving them up for a week or two, bundling them up in a package, and mailing them by surface mail? I should be glad to see them, but I am too busy to wander over to the library to look them over – I need to have them at home, to read in my spare time.
Did you know that Mama and I are planning to go to Sweden next summer? You might want to consider this in making your plans. Our plans are still subject to change, but tentatively they are as follows. I shall probably come to Belgium, about 1 April 1953, for the Solvay Congress – this is a meeting restricted by the rules to 25 people, the subject for the Ninth Solvay Congress, next year, being the chemistry and physical chemistry of the proteins (excluding biology). Probably Mama will not come because of the expense. I shall stay just a short time, possible [sic] stopping in England for the anniversary meeting of the Faraday Society, but perhaps not. Then Mama and I shall come over in the summer for the International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, in Stockholm and Uppsala, 29 July to 4 August. Perhaps we shall go to Germany (Tübingen) on the way – I have been approached to come to a conference on muscle, with the support of the Unitarian Service Committee, but this arrangement is indefinite at present.
Had you heard before you left that we are going to have a new laboratory – a joint chemistry-biology laboratory for chemical biology. JHS has been working on it, representing the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. I shall probably move into it – onto the second floor, near the connection with Crellin (there will be an archway along the west of Crellin). It is to be a laboratory for chemical biology. Beadle will move into the other end of it. By the way, Beadle is engaged to be married, to a woman who works for the Mirror, as fashion editor or something like that. We met her at the DuBridge’s tea. She looks like a sensible person.
Don’t forget to write to me immediately about the Freeman stock and notes. Mama says that we might have difficulty in getting the company to agree to having you as stockholder, because of a motion that was passed that stock would not be sold to anybody except the present stockholders, until the company is further stabilized. Would you be willing to enter into a contract with me, turning over the $935, under an agreement that I would turn over to you the income from the stock and notes, and agree to buy them back from you on demand?
Your problems came in plenty of time, because I have not yet settled down to finishing the book. I hope to get the job done during the next month, and the problems for the later chapters will be put off till the end. Accordingly I would be willing to accept more problems from you, during the month of November.
Much love from

Dear Daddy and Mamma,
I was very pleased to get your letter today when I returned from a weekend & shopping
in London. I know [sic] have a teapot. I am a member of the Society for Visiting Scientists. Very
nice. Sort of club. Bed 7/.
Firstly, I think I would like to buy stock in Freeman. It is a good way to spend ones
money; a better way to keep it. Problem 1: I don't have $935. I have $521 in bank & about $70
in debts owed & $168 in check. This is only $752. Problem 2: I can only add to this by about
$125 a month, and perhaps not that. Problem 3. I have been considering buying a motorcycle,
which would give me convenience and if I travelled enough would be cheaper than the train. I
think I can afford to run one, though a car is out of the question. If I went to Switzerland this
christmas, I could go on to Munich & get a BMW. About $500, much cheaper than in England.
I could, perhaps, borrow some money for a bike. Actually, I think I would prefer a motorcycle
to stock in w.lt. Freeman, and even if I did not, I am shy $183. Presumably I could work hard
and turn out chemistry problems and make it up. Still, while in many ways I would like to
invest, I would also like to buy a dinner jacket, and the shorter OED, and some old English
teaspoons, and an overcoat. I would be willing to enter into any agreements with you if a
technical impossibility arises, but still, I would rather have a motor bike.
I have been working on an Ehrenburg tribe and Hugh Huxley's muscle camera. I shall
take pictures of fibrous protein molecules, starting off with insulin. Huxley did a miserable job
of building and designing, but I guess he got results. The machine blew up today, and it is such
a mess I do not know if I can figure out what went wrong. I shall apply the Cochran-Crick
theory to determine the helical nature of fibrous molecules, and globular → fibrous molecules.
(Acta Cryct. (1952) 5, 581 And perhaps try to get some pictures of tropomyocin.
Curtain dimensions as already given. 50" & 37" wide. Surely, 3' curtains each is alright.
The present ones stretch to 48" each. The windows are on the outside edge of a hole in a 1ft
thick brick wall. ; The curtains hang from a overhead rail inside this hole:

The distance from the top of the hole to the bottom is 6'6". From the top of the hole to
the bottom of the ring on the roller which runs on the rails is 1 1/2".
↕═
↕6'6"
The old curtains would do
fine. Don't cut the bottom off if they > 6'6", just turn them under. Next years windows will be
different. I might live over the stables just in back. Lovely and big and cold and drafty. Huxley
lived there.
I am glad you are having a new building. That will be fine. Make Holmes get you a nice
big office with chinese vases and oriental rug and immense desk area to get messy.
Yes I met Crick and Odile. They live at 19 Portugal Place, having moved out of the
Green Door. I see Francis daily. Odile thrice I guess since arrival. Great fun. Very nice. I
must begin French lessons with some woman who has a house full of French girls. Jim goes
there. He gives a lecture next spring. No women in this town.
I do not see how I can buy stock in Freeman. It is true I have not decided recycle, and
if not I would prefer to buy Freeman than just keep an account in the bank. Yet, at the moment, I
might have need of $500 cash in a couple of months or at Easter. The Easter vac is from 25
March to 16 April, and Perut, and Kendrew and perhaps I go to Austria to ski for a bit. How
long will you be in Sweden?
Thank you very much for the international tables. I was very surprised and pleased when
vol II arrived.
Much love,
Peter

Dear Dr. Moore:
I was interested to see your paper in the last JACS, on the absorption
of ammonia by silk fibroin.
I was especially interested to read your statement that there is increasingly strong evidence that the structure of silk fibroin can be represented by the 3.7-residue helix.
I should like to know what the evidence is that you have in mind.
The X-ray diagram indicates rather strongly that the structure is a pleated-sheet structure. It is true that silk fibroin can be put into solution, and it is probable that the molecules in this form are α helixes. I judge, however, from what you say in your paper that your sample was not soluble fibroin, but the ordinary fibrous fibroin.
I may say that Professor Corey and I are pretty well convinced by the evidence that most proteins can be represented by the α helix - in particular, all the globular proteins that have been investigated so far seem to contain α helixes as their principal structural feature, and in addition, of course, the proteins of the α-keratin type have this structure; but silk fibroin, in the fibrous form, is, we believe, an exception.
I hope that you are getting along well in your new job.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jb
