Dr. Robinson D. Burbank
K-25 laboratory
Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Co.
Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Dear Dr. Burbank:
I enclose a copy of a Note that I have just sent off to Professor Fankuchen for consideration for publication in Acta.
Some tine ago I received a number of technical reports from the Laboratory for Insulation Research, including your report on the crystal structure of β selenium. Unfortunately I did not read your report at the time, and so was not aware of the structure assigned to the molecule in this crystal until the last issue of Acta arrived, last week. Your proposed structure disturbed me considerably because of the difficulty in making it compatible with the principles of structural chemistry, and I was accordingly pleased when I found that a rather small change in the structure would make it satisfactory.
You no doubt had good reason to eliminate the y parameter value 0.318 for atom one, in your derivation of the structure. I feel, however, that an error must have crept into the work. I hope that you will have an opportunity to check up on the okl intensities and the Fourier projection along the axis. If it is not possible for you to do this under your present circumstances, perhaps you would be willing to send the experimental values of |F| for this zone to us, in order that we could check on the proposed change in parameters. Also, do you have values of |F| for general forms hkl? If you have, perhaps I could get someone here to carry out a three-dimensional treatment of your data, for joint publication with you.
You probably know that Dr. King carried out his work on the two forms of red selenium in our laboratories, nearly twenty years ago. The development of x-ray techniques is clearly shown by your success in tackling both of these structures, after he had felt that an attack at that time was hopeless.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. Lindsay Helmholz
Department of Chemistry
Washington University
St. Louis, Missouri
Dear Lindsay:
I was interested to see your paper, with Wolfsberg, in the last issue of the Journal of Chemical Physics.
I am curious to know whether similar agreement between theory and experiment can be obtained with the valence bond treatment, but I have not been able to find my original calculations, made some years ago. Perhaps you checked up on this point, and could tell me in particular whether the first transition and second transition are predicted with the correct ratio of wavelengths, and whether the predicted intensities are satisfactory. I suppose that if the symmetry character of the electronic states is the same for the valence bond treatment as for the molecular orbital treatment, the discussion of interaction with vibrational levels would not be changed.
Have you seen the paper on oxygen complexes of this sort that I had in the Journal of Physical Chemistry a few months ago? I am not sure that it is pertinent to the question of color.
I trust that you are getting along well. I haven't seen anybody from St. Louis recently, except Compton, Shaffer, and recently Barry Wood - he attended the meeting of the Panel on Research of the President's Commission on the Health Needs of the Nation two weeks ago, at which I also was present.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Professor S. H. Graf
Oregon State College
Corvallis, Oregon
Dear Sam:
Ava Helen and I feel sad to have learned about the death of Mrs. Graf, and we send you our sympathy.
Teresa and Ted stopped to see us this morning. It was fun talking with them. We now have all four of our children, plus our daughter-in-law, and plus our three grandchildren here in the house with us. Linus, Jr., with his family, is on his way to Honolulu, where he is to intern at the Queens Hospital. He has just got his M.B. degree at Harvard Medical School. Our second son, Peter, got his B.S. in Physics this year at our Institute. He has been admitted as a graduate student at the Cavendish Laboratory, in Cambridge, and he will be going over to England in September. Linda, who is just twenty, has finished her second year at Reed. Crellin will be a junior in high school next year.
Teresa said that you will be coming south, to San Diego, in September. I hope that you will plan to stop by to visit us. We are making a trip East in September and probably shall be back about 20 September. We may spend August in England. Our September trip, in any case, will be to attend a seating of the Faraday Society in Toronto and to attend the dedication of the new laboratories of the Procter and Gamble Company, in Cincinnati. I am looking forward to seeing Renton Kirkwood Brodie again - I have not seen him since 1918, and I am very much interested to find our how he fits in to my early memory of him.
Remember that we are looking forward to having you
visit us.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:KA

Mr. Roger Hayward
920 Linda Vista
Pasadena 2, California
Dear Roger:
Could you make four drawings for me, for the new edition of GENERAL CHEMISTRY. These are only four out of perhaps 30 or 40 that we shall need.
I enclose a reprint on the structure of chlorine hydrate. The drawings are involved in a discussion of this structure, which, however, is devoted to xenon hydrate rather than chlorine hydrate. The drawings are the following.
Fig.
/15-12. Drawing showing the icosahedron and the pentagonal dodecahedron, as polyhedra - essentially in the style of Fig. 11-4, page 239 of COLLEGE CHEMISTRY.
Fig. 15-13. A pentagonal dodecahedron of 20 water molecules. I suggest that you use the style of the bottom part of Fig. 15-11, page 335, COLLEGE CHEMISTRY. The hydrogen atoms are to be placed arbitrarily close to or away from an oxygen atom, except that each oxygen atom must have two hydrogen atoms near it. Of the 20 oxygen atoms that are at the comers of the pentagonal dodecahedron, 10 should have a hydrogen atom sticking out radially, away from the center of the polyhedron, and 10 should not have this hydrogen atom, but should be using both of their hydrogen atoms in the formation of hydrogen bonds along the edges of the dodecahedron.
Fig. 15-14. A representation of the structure indicated in Figures 1 and 2 of the paper. I do not know what the best way of showing the structure is. I believe that we should indicate the unit cube, because I refer to the unit cube in the text. Also, there should be some indication of the larger and smaller polyhedra. I do not like the indication in Figure 2 of the extra water molecules - these are really water molecules that form tetrahedral bonds, each one binding 4 dodecahedra together. Perhaps a sphere could be represented inside of one or two of the polyhedra in this figure, corresponding to the noble gas atom. The diameter of a xenon atom is 1.9 A. The oxygen-oxygen distance along the edges of the dodecahedron is 2.76 A.
Fig. 15-15. A drawing similar to Fig. 15-13, showing the tetra-kaidecahedron, which has two hexagonal faces (not regular hexagons) and 12 pentagonal faces.
Mr. Hayward
26/6/52
I an planning to have some of the original figures for GENERAL CHEMISTRY and some of the new ones for COLLEGE CHEMISTRY used, and I suggest that your style be roughly intermediate between these.
Let me know if you have any questions - you can telephone me at home. I am pretty busy at the moment, or I would come over to talk with you about these figures.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Guggnomorra
Dear Family,
Made it: after much prodding of Alex. We arrived in Washington Thursday, after having
spent a night with V. Schomaker and family in Oak Ridge. Saw Jurg Wases. Friday, M.
Robertson and I drove to Princeton and then to Long Island, near Brookhaven. Yesterday We
returned to New York, and Mariette drove back to Princeton. I guess the Mirsky's are out of
town. I finally found a friend named Allen Maddens to stay with. Here I am with Henry Allen
Moe. Today we go to Springfield with Jane King. Moe is fine, he looks good; his son is in
Japan, in the navy.
I am not yet sure how I shall get back, but I guess it won't be a trip of sin. Probably
leave Thursday.
Friedman has Dacron suits. I must get one, but can't now. I shall have to return to New
York with some money. I want to buy records, too. Sid has a place where you can get 40
records almost for $100. I shall visit David Shoemaker, I guess.
Damn, I wish Alex were not so slow. I want to get to Wellesley.
Much love,
Peter
