- Handwritten note from Crellin Pauling to AHP, RE: Says that he received her letter from Washington. Explains that on Keith’s floating school there would be a lot of time to study, but that it would be boring at sea. Tells her to say hello to the family and asks if Petey can walk yet. Talks about the Christmas gifts he is getting for his friends. Asks if she thinks he should apply to the University of Chicago the next year and discusses the subject. Asks how Boston is. Tells her that Converse Morille and Converse Junior say hello and that he will not write again this trip. Dear Mother,
How are you? Today I received your letter from Washington. Very interesting. On
Keith's floating school there would be plenty of time to study. It is boring at sea when there is
nothing but water and air and the novelty of being on a ship would wear off quickly. Say hello
to [?], Anita, Daddy, and all various and sundry children that may be there. Can Petey walk yet?
My roommate and I are buying Pierre a record for Xmas. $2 each. He is also getting one for me,
so when I am home next weekend I will get something for him. Do you think that I should apply
for the University of Chicago next year? Keith thinks that it would do me more harm than good
to stay here. Tony Converse thinks I am a little young, but most faculty members with whom I
have conversed on the subject (excluding Toe. C. and M. C.) think that I should if I want. Of
course, I would probably never get home, but then you come to Chicago often and we have many
friends there. I think it might be worth doing. How is Boston? Do you like it there? My god, I
must go to bed.
Love,
Crelly
P.S. Converse Morille Converse Junior says hello.
P.P.S. I will not write again this trip but I will leave a note at home on Sunday.
