July 1, 1951
Dear Parents and Siblings,
I arrived here yesterday after a rather hectic week. We left Friday night and drove
twenty-four hours a day through New Orleans to Washington D.C. We stayed with the
Condon's, since the Robertson's had gone for a walk when we arrived, I called Loyd and Sylvia
and talked a bit. Wednesday I rode the train to New York. Grundfest welcomed me and the
Minsky's are in Europe. I stayed for three nights with Mrs. Stowe. I went to New York
everyday and saw Henry Allen Moe and Rose Sherman. I bought some clothes. Grundfest is a
nice guy, Nachmansohn is a German, and I do not know him very well. I am working on ion
movement in nerves using tracers, Na+ and K+. Squid nerves are used, the giant axon, but the
squid are not available right now. Woods Hole is foggy tonight, as it was last night, and it rained
today. I hear the weather has not been wonderful but a little dull so far.
The food is good and also plentiful. As much as you want for $14 weekly. The room is
smaller than our bedrooms, has three bunk beds (for six occupants) but we have only four right
now.
I am sorry, Daddy, that I mashed up your car.
Irving Klotz will give three lectures on proteins this week.
Much love,
Peter

July 7th, 1951
Dear Family,
The week has gone fairly well, though we have not yet begun really to work. The squid
are not running, and we shall begin on frog nerves on Monday. The electrical apparatus is set up
and works well.
It is very nice here. It was dark yesterday, but otherwise the weather was warm and I
have swum every day. So far I have not worked terribly hard. I have gone to the physiology
course lectures every day. Stephen Kuffler has given a couple of interesting talks and Irving
Kloty gave three on proteins. He seems very impressed with the theory according to students
who have asked him. He mentioned Pauling and Ambross different structures but emphasized
Pauling's helices and muscle contraction. I do not think he knows I am here.
Max Delbruck was here yesterday. I talked with him for a while. I have seen Bruce
Ames often. He is an excellent folk dancer. I went to a square dance Thursday night, but did not
particularly enjoy it. People I think consider me odd due to sandals (with socks,), short trousers,
and the beard. I get along pretty well though. It is imperative to take a lot of kidding.
I am waiting for G.H.A Clowes to come back. I probably shall not see him until Monday,
though. I wonder if he has a boat? I have not been in one yet.
I have not yet had lobster. I must b[u]y one. The cost $0.50 a pound, I think.
Oh, Crellin, it may be necessary to use spacers between the hub and the wheel. These are
washers put on the five bolts before the wheel is put on to support the wheel. If not used, you
will break wheels. You can buy them at Blair's probably or make them. Do not use makeshift
spacers. George Andrew would make them for you. Use steel rod or iron, not brass,
[here is a picture " or bolt Diameter
of a Washer]
necessary width. You must measure.
You can get advise easily.
I now have my full allotment of five roommates. We get along reasonably well, as far
as interference during waking and sleeping hours.
Oh Parents, if you come east why do you not come see me? I would like very much to
see you. Grundfest would like you to give a talk if you come to the August ACS meeting to the
Association of Scientific Workers or something. On Academic Freedom or what you will.
Lunch Calls-
Much love,
Peter

Memo to Linus Pauling from Himself
BIOLOGICAL SPECIFICITY
Taste and Molecular Shape
The SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN for July 1951 quotes the SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN for July 1851 as follows: "In 1846 Prof. Horsford of Harvard published a paper in which he called attention to the interesting relation between glycocol and the other sweet bodies - grape sugar, sugar of lead, etc. He appended the query, 'Is this similar taste dependent upon a similar arrangement of their minutest particles?' He has now published a pamphlet in which are enumerated, with their chemical formulae, a great number of substances to prove that such an arrangement does exist among bodies having a common taste."

Quantum-Mechanical Methods In Valence Theory
to be held Sept. 8-10, 1951 at
Ram's Head Inn, Shelter Island
Long Island, New York
Gentlemen:
Those listed below have accepted invitations to the Conference (a few others have not yet given a final answer):
C. A. Coulson
P.O. Lowdin
R. Daudel
H. Margenau
M. Kotani
J.E. Mayer

C.W. Ufford
H. Eyring
J.H. Van Vleck
J.O. Hirschfelder
G.W. Wheland
G.E. Kimball
The following agenda are proposed tentatively:
Sat. A.M. Valence theory; general (o.g. bond energies, hybridization, d orbitals, etc), and calculations by valence bond methods.
Sat. P.M. Valence theory: calculations by molecular orbital methods (semi-empirical; self-consistent-field; best MO).
Sun, A.M. Better wave functions and energies for atoms and Molecules(variational methods, including configuration-interaction and rij methods).
Sun. P.M. Computational Methods for atomic and molecular energies (including analytic approximations, evaluation and tabulation, or approximation, of integrals).
Monday Intermolecular forces (both cohesive and repulsive); and misc.
1a
Perhaps it should be emphasized again that the conference is intended for informal exchange of ideas, not for presentation of formal papers. Nevertheless, it will be good if everyone will think over, beforehand, what results, ideas, or questions he can present that are either novel, or controversial, or not widely or clearly enough understood. Such ideas can then be offered for presentation at appropriate sessions as brief semi-prepared talks which can serve as themes to start discussion. I should like to ask that those who intend to offer such talks send me a title and if possible a brief abstract for each proposed topic. I should appreciate information also about other specific topics which you are likely to feel like discussing during the informal question-and-argument phases of the sessions.
The ONR will print for us a program of the meeting including abstracts or titles of semi-prepared and informal talks, as well as abstracts of formal papers prepared for the post-meeting Report, (No doubt in some cases abstracts for formal papers will also serve for informal talks.) Such abstracts must roach [sic] me not later than Friday, August. 5 if they are to be included in the printed program! please send a title if you cannot make the deadline for an abstract.
After the conference the ONR will publish a Report including formal papers (about a dozen of these have so far been definitely promised), plus full accounts of the conference discussion, plus a general review of the accomplishments of the conference, prepared by the conference secretaries. Deadline for manuscripts of formal papers will be at the time of the conference. All manuscripts (including abstracts) should be typewritten, double spaced. All figures should be in black and white.
The group will assemble at the Ram's Head Inn for dinner near 8 o'clock on Friday, September 7. Those going by railroad will take the 4:42 P.M. (daylight saving) Long Island train from the Pennsylvania Station, New York, to Greenport, Long Island on Friday (change trains at Jamaica). The only later train leaves at 6;01 P.M., and reaches Greenport at 9:05 P.M. Returning to New York on Monday, Sept, 10 after the conference, the last train leaves Greenport at 3:00 P.M.
By car it is convenient to go by way of Greenport, from which the ferry to Shelter Island runs frequently.
Swimming will be available at Shelter Island,
Hotel room and meals of all conference members from Friday dinner through Monday lunch will be paid by ONR. A gratuity of about $4 to the hotel employees is customary (not provided for by ONR). For those whose travel to the conference is being assisted by ONR, final details as to reimbursement will be sent later. Tentatively, the plan is to refund at the time of the conference amounts equal to round-trip railroad fare (first-class railroad plus lower berth Pullman to New York, also per diem on travel time if funds permit, for over-night train distances) otherwise coach fare). However, this is subject to approval or modification by the Navy auditors. In any event, Pullman stubs, air tickets, or other receipts should be saved to be turned in.
The hotel accomodations [sic] are two in a room, with separate beds. On the accompanying sheet please indicate your choices for a roommate which will be followed as closely as possible. I would also appreciate any suggestions you may care to make about the agenda, especially an indication as to specific topics you would like to discuss.
Sincerely yours,
R. S. Mulliken
RSM/ds
I am taking the 4:42 P.M. (daylight saving) Long Island R.R. train to Greenport, Friday, September 7, 1951.
Other plans. Please give in full.

Thank you for your note. I have just arranged with Professor Swift to have you given credit for the remaining four hours of work for which you were registered.
I have your research report. So far I have not been able to arrange with anyone else to complete the work on Eurechis hemoglobin and the isocyanides. I had hoped to give summer employment to an advanced undergraduate, in order that he could carry out some investigations in which I am interested, but I did not find a suitable man who was available.
Your suggestion that you come to see me during the inter-quarter vacation is a good one, provided that I am in town. I plan to leave for the East somewhere near the first of September - possibly a few days earlier or a couple of days later. I shall then be back about September 18. You would better telephone over before coming to see me in order to find out if I am at hand.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Mr. Roger Hayward
920 Linda Vista
Pasadena, California
Dear Roger:
Could you during the next few days make some drawings. We need to get a paper off for publication immediately, because I have learned that someone else (a Swede) is doing some closely similar work, and I think that we might as well publish our results as obtained so far.
I would like to have drawings made of the structure of Na2Cd11, closely similar to those that you have already made for me in pastel. If you need to pick these up, please drop by the laboratory and get them. There is, however, one difference, which I shall describe below - this involves an interchange of the six larger atoms and six of the smaller atoms.
Also, the drawings to be made now should be line drawings from which cuts can be made - that is, black and white, line drawings, with stippling or some other type of shading of the atoms.
The five drawings needed are, as before, a central atom surrounded by the skeleton of an icosahedron. Then the complex of 13 atoms surrounded by the skeleton of a pentagonal dodecahedron. Then two views of the rhombic triacontahedron, one a skeleton drawing, as before, and the other a drawing showing 32 atoms at the corners of the triacontahedron. In this case, however, 12 of the 32 atoms are to be represented as somewhat larger than the others. These are the 12 atoms that are shaded red in your pastel drawing. They are the atoms at the ends of the longer diagonals of the six rhombs that are in the six cube faces. In order to make room for them, they might be moved out a little farther from the center of the rhomb than indicated in your earlier drawings.
The fifth drawing is a drawing showing the structure obtained by placing one of these rhombic triacontahedra at each corner of a cube, in such a way that the six rhombic faces are shared. Then an octahedron of six atoms (the same size as the smaller atoms, now) is to be introduced at the center of the cube, in the same way as in your fifth pastel drawing, the only difference being that these six atoms -are now the smaller atoms,
Mr. Hayward 7/19/51
and the others, as described before, at the ends of the long axes of the shared rhombic faces, are now the larger atoms.
If you have any questions about the nature of these drawings, please let me know. They are to accompany an article to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, The page here is 4 1/2 inches wide (length of the line) and 7 1/4 high. I think that the first four drawings might be put on a single sheet, about 11 inches square, which could then be reduced to 4 1/2 x 4 1/ 2. The second drawing could then be reduced to full page width, and the balls would come out about the size as in the first drawing.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Subject: Recommendation for opening in Pakistan
Pasadena, California
I suggest that the name of Dr. Robert C. C. St. George be sent on to the International Universities Bureau in connection with the openings for university professors and assistant professors in Pakistan.
Dr. St. George was Merck Fellow last year, from January 1 to December 31, 1950. He spent this period in Pasadena, working with me on compounds of hemoglobin. He is a biochemist, who received his Ph.D. degree at Harvard in 1949. Dr. St. George worked with Professor George Wald in the Biology Department at Harvard University.
Dr. St. George told me that he was interested in the possibility of teaching in India, and I judge that he would include Pakistan in this interest. I made an effort to get an appointment for him in India, but without success.
Dr. St. George now has been appointed instructor at Harvard, for the year 1951-52. Accordingly he would not be available, I judge, for appointment in India in September of 1951, but he might be interested in an appointment for September 1952.
Dr. St. George is married. He is a very able and well trained man. I expect him to be a first-rate teacher. While here he assisted to some extent in the teaching of freshman chemistry.

Professor Eugene G. Rochow
Department of Chemistry
Harvard University
12 Oxford Street
Cambridge 38, Massachusetts
Dear Professor Rochow:
I am writing to ask you for some information about your ideas on the low temperature coefficient of viscosity of the silicone oils.
Recently someone has told me that in lectures to your students and in talks before local sections of the American Chemical Society you have stated that it has been shown that the explanation that I have offered in my textbook of the low temperature coefficient of viscosity is wrong, and have referred to the work of Roth and Harker on octamethylspiro(5,5)pentasiloxane.
So far as I am aware, there is no reliable evidence to show that my suggestion is wrong; and, on the other hand, I think there is good reason to doubt the suggestion made by Roth and Harker, that there is an abnormally easy librational motion of the methyl groups in the silicones, and that this librational motion is responsible, in some unexplained way, for the low values of the heat of vaporization and the temperature coefficient of viscosity of these oils.
You probably know that in their paper in Acta Crystallographica vol. 1, page 34 (1948), Roth and Harker merely suggest that "free rotation of CH, groups about siloxy bonds in the linear polymers is responsible for the small intermolecular forces characteristic of these compounds." They do not explain why free rotation of this sort should lead to small intermolecular forces, nor do I understand why it should. Moreover, although Roth and Harker make a quite definite statement that they have shown that there is an abnormal case of libration motion of the methyl groups, examination of their paper shows that it is quite likely that this conclusion is unjustified, and that instead it rests upon an error of judgment made by them in the selection of the value for the x-ray scattering factor of the methyl groups.
Prof. Rochow
Roth and Harker carried out their calculations for the methyl group of the x-ray scattering factor for the fluorine atom. This was a serious error on their part. It has been found that the scattering factor for the carbon atom, as given by theoretical calculations, serves well for the carbon atom in the methyl group, except that a small correction is needed at very small diffraction angles. The scattering factor for the fluorine atom is between 1.5 and two times as great as that for the carbon atom, and it is accordingly not surprising that Roth and Harker were unable to get satisfactory agreement between the observed and calculated intensities without making some additional correction. The correction that they introduced was that of using a temperature factor corresponding to an abnormally great libration of a methyl group. This temperature factor cuts down the scattering factor for fluorine to approximately the correct value for the carbon atom. In other words, the electron distribution for fluorine atom with a large temperature coefficient is just about correct for a methyl group with a normal temperature coefficient. Roth and Harker are not justified in concluding that the methyl group in their compound shows abnormal librational motion, relative to the siloxane nucleus of the molecule.
The foregoing statements would not, of course, be justified if Roth and Harker had been required to assign an abnormal motion to the methyl group only in the transverse directions, with a normal temperature coefficient in the directions along the bonds. However, they themselves state "Within the limits of the available data, the correction could probably be represented as a specific temperature factor applied to the CH3 groups, that is , exp(-BCH,(sin θ/λ)2), but this would seem incorrect since it implies abnormally large amplitudes for silicone methyl stretching vibrations." Thus an isotropic temperature coefficient correction for the fluorine scattering factors would, according to Roth and Harker, agree with their data. This isotropic temperature correction multiplied into the fluorine scattering factor gives, however, just the correct scattering factor for the methyl group. Roth and Harker point out that there is indication that the entire pentasiloxane molecule is undergoing significant libration within the crystal. This has been observed for other molecular crystals also.
I conclude by pointing out that Roth and Harker have not presented evidence to show that there is an abnormally great librational motion of the methyl groups relative to the siloxane nucleus in the pentasiloxane molecule, and that there is no sound reason to support their proposal that such an abnormal librational motion is responsible for the properties of the silicones. Also, so far as I know, there exists no evidence that contradicts the suggestion that I have made about the nature of silicone oils.
I hope that you will tell me what you think of this matter. I have looked in your book on the chemistry of silicones, without finding any discussion of the point. I have not yet seen the second edition of the book, however.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

July 30, 1951
Dear Peter:
I have just written to Dr. Grundfest to say that Mamma and I are not going to come East until September 3, and that we are not able to include Woods Hole in our trip. We are now planning to fly directly to New York, and then directly home after the meeting. I have discussed tentatively the possibility of our buying a car which we would pick up in Detroit. If we were to do that, perhaps you would want to drive home with us. However, I am not at all sure about this plan.
I have just about decided to buy a Studebaker or Ford or some similar car. Bill Freeman has had excellent service from his Studebaker. I wish that the Studebaker looked better.
Mr. Mardian is hoping to get the fellow who ran into you to sign up to pay $40 or $50 a month for a total of about $1800.
I am putting in most of my time now (except that devoted to routine business) in continuing work on the structure of proteins.
We enjoyed the visit of Linus and Anita and the two little boys immensely.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
[handwritten note] *Have decided to buy the Riley. We shall (-och?) Boston Aug. 29, and might possibly visit you."
