Dr. Arthur Hawley Parmalee
Children's Hospital
Los Angeles, California
Dear Dr. Parmalee:
I am writing to ask if it would be possible for you to arrange for my colleagues and me to obtain some blood from sickle cell anemia from patients at the Children's Hospital, to use in our research on this disease.
With the collaboration of Harvey Itano, M.D., and three other post-doctorate research men I have been carrying on research on sickle cell anemia during the past three years. This work is being carried on with the aid of a grant from the Public Health Service. We have discovered that the hemoglobin in the red cells of blood from sickle cell anemia patients is different from ordinary adult human hemoglobin. The difference is observed in the Tiselius apparatus in the form of a difference in the electrophoretic mobility, which also corresponds to a difference in isoelectric points. It is indicated that there are between two and four additional acidic groups on every sickle cell hemoglobin molecule, or else there are between two and four basic groups missing. We are getting reedy to carry out an amino acid analysis on the sickle cell hemoglobin in order to determine the nature of this difference in chemical composition. The hemoglobin from sickle cell anemia patients is 100% of this new type, whereas that in the red cells of sickle cell trait individuals is a mixture of sickle cell hemoglobin and normal human hemoglobin.
Our progress is now being hampered by a lack of sickle cell anemia blood. We need approximately one liter of this blood for work in the immediate future, and presumably would like to have a steady source of supply later on, amounting to a similar quantity every few months. It would be possible for us to arrange to pay for the expense involved in obtaining the blood.
I am very grateful to you for whatever assistance you can give us with this problem. We are hoping that the work will not only lead to a better understanding of this disease - this is the first time that a form of hemoglobin in human beings has been found that differs from normal human hemoglobin (except for the fetal hemoglobin that occurs in
[page 2]
infants) - but also that some contribution may be made to the treatment of the disease.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. George Burch
Tulane University
Medical School
New Orleans, Louisiana
Dear Dr. Burch:
We have now got to the stage in our work of sickle cell anemia when it is important that we have a large supply of blood from sickle cell anemia patients, and we have not succeeded in making any satisfactory arrangements to collect this blood locally. I am writing to ask if you could help us with this problem.
Our program is moving along very well. We have found that the disease is due to the presence in the erythrocytes of a form of hemoglobin differing from normal adult human hemoglobin. The hemoglobin seems to contain approximately four additional acidic groups per molecule, or else it has approximately four basic groups missing. We want now to carry out analyses of the hemoglobin, in order to find exactly what the difference in the hemoglobin is. For this purpose we would like to have in the immediate future about one liter of hemoglobin from sickle cell anemia patients (not sickle cell trait), in addition to what we can obtain locally. Do you think that it would be possible for you to obtain this blood for us and to ship it to us, without too much trouble to yourself? We could pay for the special expenses involved from our Public Health Service grant in aid. The samples of blood from different patients should not be mixed, in order that we could test them individually to see whether they are sickle cell anemia samples or not. We have found that the hemoglobin from patients with sickle cell anemia is 100% of the abnormal kind, whereas that in the erythrocytes of sickle cell trait individuals is a mixture of sickle cell and normal hemoglobin. The tests of the hemoglobin are made with the Tiselius apparatus.
With best regards, I am,
Sincerely yours,

Professor A. Sommerfeld:
Munchen, Germany
Dunantstrasse 6
Dear Professor Sommerfeld:
I was very pleased to receive your letter of March 6, and to know that you are getting along well. My wife has received two or three letters from Frau Selmayr during the last two years.
It was a great pleasure to me to learn that the American Association of Physics Teachers had decided to award the Oersted Medal to you, and I am now very pleased to know that in your article for the American Journal of Physics you have mentioned the fact that I was a student of yours at the time when you gave your first lectures on wave mechanics. I often think of the fine period of work and study that I had in Munich, and my wife, too, often speaks about those days. I shall look forward to seeing your article when it comes out. Someone sent to us a few months ago a clipping from a Munich paper in which a summary of your radio talk was given, in which you mentioned me, as well as Heisenberg, as having been among your students. This, too, gave me pleasure.
I have been ill this spring, and have been in bed for several weeks - a continuation of the kidney trouble that has bothered me for eight years now. I am hoping, however, that I will be in better shape before long. All of our children are well, and my wife, too. Our son Linus is married, and is now a student at Harvard Medical School.
While I have been in bed I have been continuing to work along the lines described in my paper in your Festschrift last December, and I have developed a method of deciding what the dissociation energy of carbon monoxide is, and what the sublimation of carbon is. I think that the heat of sublimation is 14-0 kcal/mole, and that the much higher value 170 kcal/mole that has been in favor recently is for some reason in error.
Do you remember that in 1927, when you had been chosen as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, you sent my manuscript to the Royal Society as the first manuscript that you submitted? Perhaps you have noticed that I was chosen a Foreign Member of the Royal Society last year, and that I have published a paper on the theory of metals in the Proceedings of the Royal Society recently. My theory of metals, based on the idea of the resonating valence bonds, is rather a complex one, and it is difficult to subject it to precise mathematical treatment; but it seems to me to
Professor Sommerfeld 5/26/49
be valuable, nevertheless, and I have succeeded In explaining many of the properties of a metallic system on this basis.
With my best regards to Frau Sommerfeld, I am
Sincerely yours,

Mr. Arthur Linz, Vice-President
Climax Molybdenum Company
500 Fifth Avenue
New York, New York
Dear Mr. Linz:
In going over my report on "The Structural Chemistry of Molybdenum" for Dr. Killeffer, I notice that the composition of the molybdenum silicides that Climax Molybdenum produces is very close to that of the pure phase MoSi2, and also that the composition of the ferromolybdenum produced by the Company is very close to the pure Σ phase Fe7Mo6. I think that it might be worthwhile to prepare x-ray photographs of these two commercial preparations, just to see how pure they are in these substances.
These two products of the Company were not included in the set of samples that you had sent to me. Do you think that it would be worthwhile to send me samples of them, in order that we might check up on them.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Dr. Pauling:
I have your letter of May 10 concerning additional sickle cell anemia blood. There are several points that are not clear.
Do you wish 1000 cc. sent at one time or would, it be satisfactory to send units of 100 cc. as the patients appear in the hospital? What is the smallest unit which would be satisfactory for your work? As you know, some of these patients are children and are suffering from anemia, making it therefore impossible to bleed them too much at one time.
How should this be shipped? Do you have containers which you can send to us or should we purchase a certain type ourselves? Must the blood be stored in a cool atmosphere or will the temperatures which might be encountered on an airplane alter the blood unduly? The answers to these and other questions which might come to your mind would be helpful before we begin shipments. We could send the blood via Air Express, which would put it in your hands early the next morning, if it left New Orleans around noon. Are there any times when you wish to receive the shipments and other times when it would not be advisable, such as on weekends or holidays?
I have already discussed this problem with other members of the Department, and I am sure we can supply you with shipments of blood. We shall look through our files to find the patients with active sickle cell anemia in New Orleans and call them in for donations.
I am certainly happy to know that your work is going along so nicely and surely we would like to do anything we can to help this project. As soon as we have the answers to the above questions, I will see that shipments begin immediately. Best wishes to you and Mrs. Pauling and your family.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Crooks:
I am pleased to have your letter of May 16, and to learn that you are interested in our proposal that we investigate the structure of crystals of chloromycetin by the x-ray method.
We are looking forward to receiving the sample of specially purified chloromycetin that you mention as on its way to us. As to closely related compounds that we would like to have, I would make the following suggestions. I judge that the DL-threo-racemate has not been found to exist. I think, however, that we would like to have a sample of the L-threo- enantiomorph, mainly in order that we might try to crystallize the racemate. In addition, we would like a sample of the DL-erythro-racemate. At the present time we would not need the other substances mentioned in your letter. If, however, you have the dibromo or diiodo analogue of chloromycetin itself we would like very much to have it, or both of them. The question also occurs to me as to whether you have prepared a dimethyl analogue - that is, a compound with an isopropyl group in place of the dichloromethyl group. I would expect that this isopropyl compound might have nearly as great activity as chloromycetin itself.
The investigation of crystals as complex as these is not an easy job, and you must not expect us to have a complete structure determination in the near future. We are, however, looking forward to beginning this investigation.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. G. E. Burch
Department of Medicine
The Tulane University of Louisiana
New Orleans 13, Louisiana
Dear Dr. Burch:
I am very pleased to have your letter of May 20. I have talked with Dr. Harvey Itano about the details of the method of sending us sickle cell anemia blood, and our suggestions are presented below.
We would like to have two or three units of, if possible, as large as 100 cc. of sickle cell anemia blood as soon as they can conveniently be sent, in order that some preliminary tests of the methods to be used in further investigations could be made. Then we would like to have a larger quantity, as close to 1000 cc. as possible, for the next stage of the investigation. The individual units that would be pooled to make this larger quantity could be sent on to us when they are collected, and stored by us until the pool can be made. We are planning to make electrophoretic tests of the units from separate patients before pooling these units. Could you also identify the patients from whom the units are taken, in case that we find some interesting abnormality.
We suggest that the units could be shipped to us is small vacuum bottles, probably the one-half pint size. Any effective anti-coagulent could be added to the blood. It might be worth while to dilute the blood with normal saline solution to a volume such as to fill the bottle leaving only a little extra air space, and I suppose that it would be desirable to tape the stopper in the bottle, in order to avoid possible loss through expulsion of the stopper at high altitude. The bottles and the contents could be chilled shortly before packing and shipping by Air Express.
I suggest that you telegraph us collect when a shipment is to be made, giving, if possible, the number of the flight. It would be all right for the shipments to reach us on any weekday, but probably not on Sunday.
If it is not extra trouble for you would you purchase a supply of the Thermos bottles, and submit the bill to us for reimbursement, along with a statement of other expenses involved in the collection and shipping of the blood.
We are so well pleased with the results of our sickle cell disease that we would like to make some similar studies on other abnormalities of
Dr. Burch -2- 5/25/49
the red cells, in case that we could obtain material. Would you keep on the lookout for patients with ovalocytosis, and also for patients with Mediterranean anemia, and collect samples of blood from these patients for our studies? We are planning to extend our studies of abnormal hemoglobin to include magnetic investigations and other special types of physical-chemical investigations.
I am hoping to be able to see you next Tuesday. We are grateful to you for assisting with our problem - we have had great trouble in getting sufficient sickle cell anemic blood locally to permit our work to go on at a suitable rate.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Professor Arne Tiselius

Uppsala, Sweden
Dear Arne:
I was pleased to receive your letter of April 20, and to learn that you and Mrs. Tiselius had reached home safely, and that you had enjoyed your visit to the Grand Canyon and in Texas.
It was a great experience for us to have you here, and both my wife and I had a fine time visiting Yosemite with you and riding through the San Joaquin valley and over the mountains.
My operation turned out to be more troublesome than I had anticipated. I had to stay in bed for five weeks (fortunately, only a few days in the hospital), but I am now getting along well. I am leaving tonight for Tampa, Florida, where I shall give an address in connection with their commencement ceremonies and shall receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Humanities. I have not been is Florida before, and am looking forward to seeing this state. I am then flying on to New York to attend a Meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Chemical Society, and I shall be home early Sunday morning.
My wife and I are indeed looking forward to visiting Sweden again sometime. We enjoyed the two weeks that we spent there in 1947 very much, and we hope to come again, and also to visit Norway, where we have not been before, and to go back to Denmark.
We have no new results to report on sickle cell hemoglobin. We are still having difficulties about collecting samples of sickle cell blood, but I think that the problem has been solved, and that we shall soon have enough material to permit the investigation to be completed.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:shh

Tuesday night
Dear Love:
I've arrived in Tampa after an interesting trip from New Orleans - 7

to 11- in a DC4. We went through some rough weather as we neared Tampa, and then, as we approached the field, we entered a strange rainfall, and the whole countryside was brightly lit by scores of great lightning flashes, the airport and all buildings being dark (the electrical storm had knocked out the power), except for a few (emergency) red lights marking the landing strips. The pilot circled the field twice, in order to be sure, I think, of his identification of landmarks under these unusual conditions, and then landed nicely.
The publicity man of Tampa University met me. He's a Whitehead - one of the Virginia Whiteheads, however, rather than of the Oxford clan - a pleasant young

ex-Navy man who knows George Hall. I have a fancy suite here in the Tampa Terrace - Rm 721, here, I think: entrance hall, sitting room, bedroom, and bath. [an arrow drawn in by LP points to the location on the picture of the hotel on top of the letterhead] It is cool, because of the thunderstorm; in New Orleans it was very hot and sticky. I wore a doctor's white gown - a real "man in white". My plane reach New Orleans at 9 AM, and I reached the medical school - right next to the great Charity Hospital, with 4200 beds - at 10, or a bit before. I walked around the hospital, reading the signs "Entrance Emergency Patients, White"; then, a hundred feet on, "Entrance Emergency Patients, Colored";
and the same on the other side of the building, at the entrances for visitors.
[page 3 on the same letterhead]
Dr. Burch told me that handles only negro patients, that he prefers them to whites because of their simple ways and their gratitude; and also because they have all the diseases the whites have and some others besides. He and I and six other men in white-young interns-then made tour of the wards, so that I could see some sickle-cell patients. We started with babies a few months old, the very young children, who were have attacks of anemia, edema [?] of hands and feet, pains. One baby, seven months old, and just had his spleen removed four days ago, after having been built up by transfusions (this opera-

tion seems to help young sickle-cell patients). Then we saw a boy of 16, who looked 12, with spider-like hands and scars of little ulcers on his legs, and a girl of 22, who looked 14, and who had great nearly-healed ulcers and great scars.
I had lunch (cheese sandwich, coke, apple pie) with the doctors, and at 3 I talked to them - about 40- about our sickle-cell results. Then, at 5, Dr. Burch took me to the Restaurant Autonie [?] for a blow-out. We had a Sazerac, Bisque Ecreuisse [?], Pampano [sp ?] amandine avec pommes souffles, ice cream avec cerises flambees (with the lights turned out while the waiter ladeled the flaming sauce and cherries into the dishes) and New Orleans coffee, thick with chickory. Ten dollars. Then he took me to the airport, past the lines of oleanders beside the road and the great meadows of water hyacinths in the swamps.
[page 5 continues on the back of page 2]
Much love to you and Peter and Linda and Crellie.
Your own
Paddy.
