November 5, 1948
Dear Mom-
This coming weekend we move into our new house for which we are exceedingly
thankful, since this waiting period has not been particularly pleasant. This last week and a half
has been spend in a kitchenette apartment in a hotel, since Mrs. Thompson has several people
staying with her. But I think out new house is worth waiting for. We're full of plans for making
this place our own.
Why don't you come east with Dad and stay with us while he's in France? You know
wives can travel half fare by plane besides we'd very much like to see you. We have plenty of
room. I think it's an excellent idea. Also we have many things to talk about.
We had a good idea for a 25th anniversary present for you and Dad - a dishwashing
machine - I think Hotpoint is probably the best. But there are such things as installation
problems, and water has to be hot 160 on the dishes. So we have to make sure that you want
one before we give it you.
This election certainly has been exciting and we are tremendously glad that Dewey was
defeated. I'm sorry that Wallace got so few votes, but on the other hand if he had gotten more
Truman would have suffered, possibly enough to give Dewey the lead. This election is a turning
point in politics, I think an indication that the public is moving left, and that the Republican
party will have to follow if it want s to stay in existence. By for the best thing is that now we
can give a big horselaugh to the majority of newspapers, the pollsters, and especially Time
Life Magazine.
We certainly hope you will come to see us, Mom
Much love to you,
Linus

Dear Mom
Well, what about my suggestion?
Day before yesterday we moved what excitement and turmoil. Mostly bad because
we'd been looking forward so long to moving so it was anticlimactic. But we're finally here,
and worrying about furnishing and how much we ought to be spending.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Dr. Jesse J. Josephs
1311½ East 60 Street
Chicago 37, Illinois
Dear Dr. Josephs:
I thank you for your letter, and the copy of your letter to Mr. Murphy, about the advertisement containing a caricature of a negro janitor that appeared in the September 13, 1948 issue of Chemical and Engineering News.
I think that it is well worth while for us all to be on the lookout for editions in which the publications of the American Chemical Society, in the advertising columns or elsewhere, overstep the boundaries of good taste and proper behavior. In particular, I feel that we should be very careful about offering gratuitous insults to minority groups, and it is very good to have the advertisement mentioned in your letter pointed out to the Society.
On the other hand, I also feel that there would be a danger in our instituting a rigorous policy of censorship, even of the advertisements that appear in the Society publications.
I am sure that your letter to Mr. Murphy will be of value to him, in helping to indicate how he should make his dicisions, recognizing the dangers of unnecessary censorship on the one hand and of the publication of offensive material on the other. I feel that it is very important that the members of the Society, such as you and your associates, help in the formulation of these policies.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

November 15 [1948]
Dear Mom
Say you'd better be careful! Breaking ankles is no simple business. I saw the x-rays of
a girl who had jumped out of a 3 story building and landed on her feet and her ankles were a
mess. But at last reports she was still alive.
I'm sorry you won't be coming to see us this November, but on the other hand when you
do come he will probably have finished our decoration and you will be able to see the end result
instead of the process. At any rate we shall certainly be glad to see you when you do come.
I'm happy you like the dishwasher idea but there is a lot to consider, as I said before.
Perhaps you'd prefer a Thor which will wash both dishes and clothes. But for automatic washers
one needs 170 water for best results, which means, probably, an auxiliary tank. I'm having
trouble myself deciding whether it's worthwhile, because if we got a dishwasher we'd need an
extra booster heater, and with the heater we'd have to arrange a flue, etc, and so it goes one
thing adds to another. Quite a racket.
Do you mean to say that Pop voted for Hoover in '28? I'm Amazed! The New Yorker
this week is wonderful in the laughs it has at the expense of all things Republican, press,
pollsters, etc. And Time is devoted almost exclusively to excuses for the election results thus
New Yorker's comment that with all the reasons expounded now one can hardly have expected
the Republicans to come even close.
We had a nice dinner at Edsall's last Friday can't say that I like the Mrs. though Eldest
son completely op[p]ressed.
We've been lax so far about going to museums. Anita has had a period of not feeling
well and my weekdays are completely filled, so things go slowly. Here we're completely
occupied with the houses.
Our telephone is Wellesley 5-3702 M.
Much love,
Linus

Henry went to bed early. He thought Truman might would win — since he said it was clear that the reports were being slanted toward the Republicans, & still there was doubt.

[written on The Biltmore letterhead]
10 PM Sunday
1948
Dear Love:
The trip was wonderful - not much variety, just flying above great oceans of cloud; but then New York was clear, and the great sea of lights was magnificent.
I read a copy of Harpers, and talked to my seat mate, who was Sol Ravitz's brother-in-law.
I have a nice big room in the Biltmore, with a double bed. Room 604 - it looks like one we had together once.
TWA made me angry, because there were five gouges on your bag when it was taken out of the plane! I complained, and they glued them down, which made me late to the hotel - I've just arrived. The Chicago - New York flight only required 2 ½ hours!
Tomorrow I'll buy some things (dress shirt + tie, which I forgot). My Paris address, Till Nov. 28, is Hotel Louvre, rue de Louvre. England (Nov. 28 - Dec.1) Royal Inst. (?) Or Roy. Soc. Washington (Dec 2 to 4) Hay-Adams. Indianapolis (Dec 6) Athletic Club.
I'm scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles (TWA flight 59 from Kansas City) at 12
00
midnight (1 AM daylight) Dec.7. ←8 Perhaps Peter could take the car and park it in the Biltmore Garage, say, and leave the key plus a note saying where the car is, either in the Airlines Terminal, 530 S. Grand, or the Biltmore desk. I'll ask at both places.
I love you, darling, and all the children.
Your
Paddy

Dear love: How do you like this one? I think that your kodachromes of the Canyon are better.
Henry seems impressed by the Truman government.
We are flying at 3000 ft. Through clouds. It is rougher than before - we stay low until the Boston stop. My hyascine [?] pill seems to be doing its job. There's a Frenchman aboard with a rosette in his buttonhole - I don't know who he is.

9:30 PM Monday Nov. 22, 1948
Dear Love: We are now approaching Gander. We have eaten dinner and many passengers are asleep. I've been reading the New Yorker, and also two pamphlets, Intermediate + Advanced Conversation French, that I got at Macy's. They are by two UC professors + are very good. We have been flying at 15000 feet. The sky is clear, but I heard someone say that there is snow on the ground at Gander.
There is a photographer on board, taking pictures for two magazines (one is Pageant). He began at the New York starting place (TWA station), continued in the bus, the terminal, and now the plane.
The French pamphlets have jokes. "The Physics Lesson." Heat expands + cold contracts." [sic] "Give an example." "In summer the days are long + in winter they are short."
Love from Paddy

Hotel du Louvre.
Dearest love:
All went well on the flight over the ocean- it was smooth, and in the morning there were only a few clouds. I slept for several hours. We flew by a rather southernly route directly to Paris, and on the way circled about the Mount St Michel. [A small picture of mountains in LPs writing] We had a head wind, so that our ground speed was only a little over 200 m.p.h., and it was getting dark when we landed at Paris-Orly, and was 7 when we reached the hotel. The bus from the airport to the Paris air office was a good introduction to Paris- it took off with a terrific jerk and at once rounded a corner on two wheels, and its horn, which the driver sounded often, was like a Paris taxi horn, multiplied 10 times in volume. I had dinner at the hotel (thick soup, omelet +french fried potatoes, a nice endive salad, mille feuilles [?] pastry, + french "cafe"), and went to bed. This morning I forgot what the coffee was like, + had coffee, rolls, butter, + jam- tomorrow I'll have tea.
On the way from the air office to the hotel I asked the cab driver what kind of a hotel the Hotel du Louvre was. He answered thoughtfully, choosing his words with care, that it was a good hotel, but not one of the flossy ones, and that it was patronized by "les diplomats, et les
[page 2]
hommes d'affaires assez important".
I'm going to go out now and cash some travelers checks and perhaps do some shopping before going to the University.
Did you hire your Jamaican? I hope that the spoon turned up, and that your ankle is all right, and that David is driving the children to school all right, and that in general everything is going well. I thought that the tea went off extremely well, and that everyone enjoyed it.
On the flight we stopped for one hour in Boston and one hour in Gander. It was cold in Gander, with a little snow on the ground. Here in Paris this morning it is, I guess, about 45oF. The sun is shining through occasional rifts in the clouds. My room (450) looks out on the court, but I can hear the taxi horns out on the street. I wish that you were here, so that it would be fun to go somewhere- I don't know what to visit that would not better when you are here. No invitations have come to the hotel for me, except from the Reteur et Madame Jean Savailh for dinner Saturday, which I have answered formally. All the love in the world from your Paddy

Dearest love:
I hope that you are getting along well, and that you still love Paddy. I love you. I have had a busy day. I got up, had breakfast, went to TWA to get my London tickets fixed up, went to the hotel to read the papers, and then to the Academie des Sciences to see if there would be a seance that I could attend (there won't), and then looked at book stands in front of the Academie for a while. Then I went out to see Magat, and had a good talk with him. I gave him some cigarettes, a can of bacon, and a jar of soluble coffee. Then I went to my copper pot man and bought some pots, and then back to the Lab. de chemie physique to attend a meeting of the Societe de chemi. phys. I commented on the speech, in French, (with help from the audience.) Then I talked with Bauer a while (he would like to have a copy of the Jeep kodachrome). His son now has an apartment. Then I came to the hotel for supper ( I had no lunch but 100g of roasted chestnuts, and thema [?] cup of hot chocolate). For supper I had a glass of Dubonnet, soup (potato), six snails* [written in margin on side in vertical fashion: "*Neither meat nor fish nor fowl!" ] , a serving of petit pois, endive salad, a slice of bread, a bottle of beer, a chocolate eclair, and coffee. It was served course by course, and took a long time (730 to 900). From 700 to 730 I talked with an old Frenchman - a Membre de L'Academie, I think - who twice before had got me to sign a sheet of paper and write an appropriate sentiment.
This time the top of the paper said "If you were to die now what last word would you leave to the world." Condon had written something like "I would be giving thanks to God for having allowed me to have such a good time." Towe [?] had written something like "It has been a great life - I'd like to carry on", and Michael Heidelberger "I wish it could be continued in the next." I wrote something like "The world has been a great place to live in - but it could be made greater by abolishing war establishing lasting peace."
After supper I came to my room and worked some more on my metals calculations - I did some work on the plane. Then I wrote a two-page draft of my ACS presidential speech, to be given in September in Atlantic City. Then I wrote this letter - and now I'll go to bed, and read the New Yorker a while, until I get sleepy. I've been feeling fine - very little nose trouble, no air sickness ( only one pill at the start of each of the two flights) - only lonely for you, even with your wooden leg. My bed here in Room 450 is big enough for you, too.
Magat told me a story going around that the Swedes, frightened by the Russians, gave Blaskett the Nobel prize for his recent book, which should serve to placate them.
Henry Moe said that Bowre, whom he helped appoint to the visiting professorship at Harvard (he suggested him after reading his two books) is a complete flop there, his lectures being very dull and elementary ones not even up to sophomore standards. I said that you said he gave excellent lectures, and Henry said that supported his idea that Bowre should be told, but the Harvard people won't tell his that his lectures are not suitable.
I enclose a clipping about "General" Osborn (former General). I took a strong dislike to him when he talked to the emergency Committee. Magat says that Blachett may not be right about everything - but that the opposition should document their statements as well as he does his. I'll buy a copy of Blachett's book in London.
I hope I get home on schedule.
Love from your
Paddy

Midnight, Thursday
Dearest love: I've just had a wonderful experience; if only you could have been along. Yesterday I saw a man carrying a sign about experimental films showing at the Studio Parnasse; so tonight after dinner I went over, just in time to get the last seat in the tiny theater - many people were turned away! There were 8 or 9 short films; a few poor ones, and some extraordinary ones. The best, I think, was a Swedish film that has won two international grand prizes. It is about an episode in stone-age Sweden, the scene being around a big campfire at night in midwinter, and the event taking place in the flickering firelight, in the center of the tribe, clad in woven blankest, the voluntary sacrifice of a young man, by the priest wielding a flint dagger, before the wooden idol and the absolution of the sins of the people by splattering them with his blood and then, I think, the eating of his flesh (perhaps it was a time of famine). It was deeply impressive, and beautiful - really a wonderful film.
My second choice was "Une nuit sur le Mont Chauve", made in 1933 in Paris by Alexeioff and Claire Parker - a striking impressionistic treatment of the Witches' Sabbath, to Moussorgsky's music. Then I like very much a film "Lichtertanz" by Fischinger - No.12 of a series. It was a marvelous precise coordination of moving figures of light + the music - far better than the Hollywood fellow's efforts. Also "Sehnscht", a treatment of a simple Russian love theme by Eisenstein, with wonderful photographs of trees and water - terrific motion and change at first - falling giant trees, crashing surf - and great quiet and beauty at the end. A French film "Rain," had some fine effects of reflections of walking people, horse, and vehicles in the wet street. There was a very amusing animated film - microbes that are the [second page] germs of politicians, mothers-in-law, etc- made in France in 1908 .
I walked down the rue de Notre Dame des Champs + Boul. Raspail to rue de Bac before finding a cab. I've got chafed from walking so much.
Today was Thanksgiving Day, so for dinner I had Dubonnet, vegetable soup, 12 snails
(I don't eat much)↑
beer, endive salad, Brie cheese, Camembert cheese, and plum pie, and coffee. The waiter, whom I had that I didn't eat meat or fish or fowl, said "Le medecin a oublié les escargots".
I spent half of the day getting my plane reservations. From London to New York my ticket read "subject to load". I was sure that this meant that I wouldn't be taken, + the weather in London is such that I'm not sure that I could get there; fortunately and extra flight has been arranged for Paris - New York on Tuesday, + I have a solid reservation on it (flight 4973),T.WA). [sic]
I saw Marguin [?] today. Bauer (with whom I'll dine tomorrow night) said he wanted to see me. He wanted some biographical data for a report that he said was scheduled to make to the Academie des Sciences. He sends regards to you, from his wife too.
Its cold now - below freezing. I'm going to take a bath to warm up before going to bed, if there is hot water.
There's a wonderful copper watering pot in my young friends's [large picture of
place, but its about two feet high, so I can't bring it to you. watering pot]
I cabled Martin that I wouldn't be in London, and I'll write Ideal (or Mrs. R.)
Today was St. Catherine's day, when the dress makers' assistants celebrate. Several bands of them in costume were dancing down the street this morning.
Much love from your
Paddy
