Professor Kasimir Fajans
Department of Chemistry
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Dear Professor Fajans:
I was interested to read year letter of December 28, and the galley proofs of your book reviews which I return herewith.
You are right in surmising that there has been no change in my conception of the structure of the aside ion, and that the brief reference to it in my address on modern structural chemistry was not supposed to be a complete discussion of its electronic structure.
The only recent work that I have in the process of publication and in which you might be interested is a new discussion of the structure of metals and intermetallic compounds. My first paper on this subject will appear in the January issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
With best wishes for a Happy Hew Year to you and your family, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. Louis Finkelstein
Institute for Religious and Social Studies
Jewish Theological Seminary of America
Broadway and 122nd Street
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Finkelstein:
I have been thinking about the kind invitation to me, in your letter of December 24, to prepare a spiritual autobiography for the contemplated volume. I am sure, however, that it would not be proper for me to accept.
For one thing, as you surmise, I am very busy— especially busy during the next few months, for I am completing the writing of a book, which is to be published this summer. Also my work for the Committee of Selection of the Guggenheim Foundation and the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists will require a good bit of my time during the next three months.
Moreover, any paper which I might write would, I am afraid, be sadly out of place in your volume. I might describe myself as a boy, and then a youth, who accepted the conventional religious beliefs and practices, hoping that other people had a deeper understanding of their significance than he had; and then present the argument which led, with the development of my power of independent thought, to my present state of atheism. (I suppose that it is proper to use the word atheism here—that is, I suppose that it has not been adopted by any sect, and given some special connotation.) I could also mention the respect which I have for the teaching of the great religious leaders. I could not, however, write this in an emotional way—I have a deep emotional feeling for the wonders of nature, but this feeling does not prevent me from discussing natural phenomena and natural structure in a straightforward and logical manner.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

January 14, 1947
Sir Robert Robinson
Dyson Perrins Laboratory
Oxford University
Oxford, England
Dear Professor Robinson
I am pleased to have occasion to write to you, in order to tell you how such I am looking forward to spending the better part of the academic year 1947-48 in Oxford, and to thank you and your colleagues for having recommended me for appointment as Eastman Professor. It will be a great opportunity indeed for me to get better acquainted with you and your colleagues, and with Oxford.
It seems to be impossible for me to arrange to leave Pasadena before the end of the first term of 1947-48, and I am accordingly planning to arrange to spend the second term and third term in residence. I propose tentatively to lecture on the nature of the chemical bond during the second term, and on intermolecular forces and biological specificity during the third term. I would appreciate your advice about the matter of the topics of my lectures.
Professor Zechmeister has received a letter from Mr. R. L. Huang, asking if there is a vacancy here for an organic chemist. He is hoping to receive a research fellowship or part-time assistantship. I am afraid that there is nothing that we can offer him. However, in case you feel strongly that we should do our best to arrange for him to spend a year here, please let me know.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. John C. Kendrew
Trinity College
Cambridge, England
Dear Dr. Kendrew:
I was very pleased to receive your letter, and to learn about the work that you are now carrying on. We are sending you some of our reprints in the field of immunochemistry and crystal structure under separate cover. Dr. Corey is getting a good start again now on the structure of amino acids and peptides. I have not been doing anything recently on hemoglobin, except to begin a study of the nature of the hemoglobin in relation to the phenomenon of sickling in sickle cell anemia.
I shall look forward to seeing you in England next
year. Please give my regards to Dr. Roughton, and also to Perutz.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Jan 29 1947 [In AHP's handwriting]
Wednesday evening.
Dearest love:
How are you getting along? I hope that everything is all right. I'm feeling ind - still a trace of a cold. I stayed in bed yesterday afternoon, because of feeling a bit under the weather - and this morning when Michael called me I sat up so fast as to make me dizzy - a dizziness which lasted for some time.
Michael sends his greetings to you. He had dinner with me at Shrafft's, & we saw an old movie - "Dodsworth" - not bad.
Our dinner companions here last night were Ann Levene (born Montana, about 1880) - widow of Phoebus D Levene) and Mrs Clark Eichelberger (Clark is in LA). I cottoned to Mrs Levene - she's cute. As Schaffner said to me today (about some other chicken) "She can boil her socks in my coffee anyday!" Schaffner is great - a wonderfully smart fellow - has hired in every state in the Union - in 1500 towns. Thorfin & I are riding down to Princeton with him tomorrow morning. I told him about my new Institute for Medical Research, which excited him - he told me about a clinician who had the same idea in 1937, about Huntington Mem. Hosp. & CIT, which fell through - and who had asked him to be executive officer! Dr. Whofford, or something.
Schaffner intimated that I might be interested in being director of the New York Hospital - that beautiful tall building north of the Rock. Inst. Lots of money - great chance for medical research.
Thorfin is all right. Phoebe still has headaches - steady ones.
Miss Kingdon said that if I came back without you they wouldn't let me in. She & Weaver took me to lunch. She gave away 12 pears, thinking they would spoil - perhaps you should send her more. Weaver said you'd promised to send edible-pod peas to him.
I love you, darling, and the children.
Your Paddy

Aydelotte's house
Princeton, New Jersey
10 PM January 30, 1947
Dear love:
The ride down, with Schaffuer, Thorfin, and the secretary (Mrs Payson), was moderately good- weather fine, but highway uninteresting. Thorfin and I, in the back seat, talked about Martin's new and wonderful chromatographic technique for amino acids.
On arrival we stopped to register at the Nassau Tavern, and then went to the Institute for Advanced Study for lunch. As we went toward the private dining room we passed the Aydelottes. They spoke to me: Mrs. Aydelotte said how well I looked, and Frank asked about Oxford, saying he hoped that we could go for the whole year. I said I was afraid we couldn't, and he said to let him arrange it with Oxford. Then he took me to one side and asked me about my health. I told him that I worked hard and was in a steady state. He asked if my health would permit me to be his successor as Director of the Institute. I said yes- but that, while the great job attracted me, I felt that it would be hard to pull myself away from my own scientific work. (They had first asked me to stay overnight with them, and I had agreed.) Our meetings with Einstein, who seems well, lasted all day and evening, and I have just reached Aydelotte's house, by
[page 2:]
taxi from the Tavern. They have gone to bed- I let myself in by a key they had given me. I'll have breakfast with them in the morning, and possibly learn more. Perhaps the Institute should be moved to Pasadena.
I'm lonesome for you. The next meeting of the Emergency Committee probably will be in Williamsburg- the three days following the Academy meeting. We should have fun there.
Love from
Your old
Paddy
