Dr. S. S. Prentiss
National Defense Research Committee
1703 - 32nd Street NW.
Washington 25, D.C.
Dear Dr. Prentiss:
Our final formal report for Contract OEMsr-584 has been completed. This report, entiteld "The Pauling Oxygen Meter", was prepared by Dr. Reuben E. Wood and Mr. David P. Shoemaker. It contains a brief history of the development of the oxygen meter, descriptions of the models of the meter which have been developed by this project, an analysis of the operation of the meter, and descriptions of the operations which are involved in the construction of the oxygen-sensitive element, the quartz fiber suspension. Seventy copies of this report have been lithoprinted by the facilities of this Institute. Forty-five of these copies will be sent to you immediately unless you telegraph other instructions to us.
Could we obtain immediate permission, prior to formal authorization, to make the following distribution of the remaining twenty-five copies:
One copy to be sent immediately to Dr. Reuben B. Wood, the senior author of the report.
Six copies to be sent immediately to Dr. A. O. Beckman. Dr. Beckman's group, which produces the oxygen meter commercially, is in a position to make good use of this report.
Ten copies to remain in the files of the Division of Chemistry of the California Institute of technology for our own use.
The remaining eight copies to remain here pending instructions for their disposal.
The lithographic plates from which this report has been printed have not yet been destroyed. The report contains many photographs and line drawings and for that reason was lithoprinted instead of mimeographed. By far the major cost of preparing this report has been the preparation of the plates from which it was printed. Consequently as many copies of this report as are likely to be desired should be prepared before the plates are destroyed. We are able to have the plates either destroyed at once or stored indefinitely, and we would appreciate instructions as to their disposal.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Mom
Thanks a lot for the pictures I'll get these back to you eventually. I can't remember
having seen them before. That one at the Chem picnic looks completely candid. It also shows
that I've matured considerably in three years. Perhaps I should add Thank God!
I'm awfully sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well lately hope you're well now.
I have a hunch that you work too hard you really should take a rest once in a while.
I had a physical fitness test today. I managed to pull off 20 chip ups, which is my record
so far. The only thing I'm relatively week on is running do you remember that I was even fast
enough to be on the track team at POLY? Surprising degenerative although the only reason I
could run was their [sic] was as a means of escaping fights and other physical contacts. Now I
avoid then by using my tongue a much lazier method.
Tomorrow I will have been in the army one whole God-damned year. It's too bad I don't
have enough money to go out and celebrate by getting drunk. It would be the only fitting
celebration.
Christmas is just around the corner so I'd better start relating my desires. Besides a
discharge, a car, a boat, a home, a wife, and an income of $10,000 a year there isn't much that I
need. I did succeed in thinking of a few things, though. How about having an engraving plate
with Linus Pauling Jr on it made and a ream or so of stationary run off? You could send batches
of it to me at intervals. Also the plate would be a permanent investment. I leave the choice of
type up to you and Dad I think it should be small and masculine . Not too small, though I
don't want this writing to drown out the little L.P. Jr.
The other things are a subscription to Time and Look and money, in that order of
importance. I'm really looking forward , by the way, to tastes of your Christmas cooking.
You might give me some suggestions for the family I'm rather at a disadvantage. I
don't like just wandering into a store and buying anything it's too impersonal.
Did you try Pierres' crepe suzettes they are what he's noted for. I'll bet Dad enjoyed his
steak. I haven't had a really good one since Texas.
Give my kind regards to the family and everyone. I hope, by the way, that the family
takes my letters to you as being in part to them too. Especially Dad since I succeed writing him
almost once a year.
All my love,
Linus
P.S. Does J. Rooke still work for Dad? How has being married changed V. Shoemaker?
Probably disillusioned, since it's J.Rooke!

Scripps Oceanographic Institute
La Jolla, California
Dear Dr. Fox:
This is a belated answer to your note of October 9. I had an interesting talk with Professor Zechmeister about your plans, which seem to me to be entirely satisfactory. I am glad that you are applying for a Guggenheim Fellowship.
I was pleased to learn about your work at the Corona meeting, and I am looking forward to talking with you further about the scientific problems in which we are both interested. Perhaps when the war is over, and we are not so busy, we can have additional discussions. I am looking forward, in fact, to stopping to see you in La Jolla when the gasoline situation permits us to drive around more freely.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Dr. Beard:
About a year ago the Lederle Laboratories kindly provided us with about 500 cc. of a concentrated Type I anti-pneumococcus rabbit serum. In connection with a special problem in which I am interested, I would be very grateful to you for providing me with the answers to the following questions:
1. How much of this concentrated type I anti-pneumococcus rabbit serum would you have on hand, and would it be possible for it to be purchased, in case that it were needed?
2. What other types of anti-pneumococcus serum do you have, and in what quantities?
3. In case that a considerable supply of these sera is not available at present, could the Lederle Laboratories prepare it on order?
With best personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Thursday [Nov. 1944]
Dearest Mom
Last Thanksgiving I spent planting trees in barren Texas soil; this I spend allowing seeds
of imagination to grow and grow. I have a turkey dinner both times, though.
I expect to get or of the hospital in two or three days I want very much to be able to start
school next Monday. Losing two weeks is bad enough.
Pete is getting a subscription to Yank for Christmas it will probably start coming before.
Give me love to everyone.
I love you
Linus
