Dear Tom:
I was very glad to see your two letters when I got back from the East on Friday.
A week ago Friday I had a good visit with Dr. Robert Loeb, whom I had not met before. He talked to me a long time about the blood substitute situation. He told me that so much human plasma is being collected that the C.M.R. now feels that the blood substitute problem is no longer so urgent as it was a year ago. Moreover, the unsatisfactory outcome of the bovine albumin project has discouraged the blood substitute group somewhat. Nevertheless, his committee will, I think, support some blood substitute work, such as that which we are carrying on.
I am glad to learn that you are now getting more promising results with pectin than before.
Why do you not write to Loeb and submit to him your suggestion regarding the possible use of human globin? It seems to me that this idea might well be worth some preliminary work. I suppose that there is some danger that the process of removal of the hemes would alter the globin in such a way as to produce toxic reactions, but this could be answered only be experiment.
We are going to start out now to prepare a large amount of our polyoxy gelatin, and to give it as complete characterization by physical-chemical methods as possible, before submitting it to physiologists. I hope that we shall have some ready for you before many months have gone by.
Dr. Koepfli told me that you had composed a fine letter to the C.M.R., advocating that more technical aides be hired and that other similar measures be adopted to improve the efficiency of the Committee. He said that he had obtained several signatures for the letter down here. I am glad that you have gone ahead with this work, along these lines. Robert Loeb told me that he had difficulty in keeping up with his C.M.R. duties, because he does not have any technical assistance. I think that he should have a technical aide.
We were all happy to have you and Mrs. Addis here, and I hope to see you again before long.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Executive Secretary
National Defense Research Committee
1530 P St., N.W.
Washington, D.C.
Dear Dr. Stewart:
We have received the enclosed inquiry concerning the oxygen meter. If your office will give us permission to discuss it with Major Ribal or other responsible representative of the Fourth Antiaircraft Command we shall do so.
Do you see any objection to modifying the classification of this instrument in whatever way may be necessary to give us continuing permission to discuss the meter with any responsible representative of the armed services to whom it may be of interest? If there are no objections to this, such permission would probably facilitate the application of our instrument to war problems.
If this latter question requires some time to decide, will you please send us your decision with regard to Major Ribal first?
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Professor Lamb:
In the manuscript which accompanies this letter, Professor Zechmeister and I and our collaborators have indicated Roman type for the words cis and trans when not used as prefixes in chemical names. It seems to me that this simplification is a desirable one, since these words can, I think, now be taken into the English language. I am writing now to ask if you are not willing to permit us this usage; and further to inquire as to whether it may not, in your opinion, be well to consider the possibility of using these prefixes in chemical names without italicizing them.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

May 24, 1943
Dear Mom,
I was extremely glad to hear from you, but I am very sorry to hear that you were unwell
again. I hope that your illness clears up permanently. I am ashamed of my lack of letter writing;
it is inexcusable.
I have been to see Porgy and Bess and The Gypsy Baron by Johanna Strauss. Porgy was
wonderful especially the male singers, including Tod Duncan. Irra Petina was in the Gypsy
Baron, and was quite wonderful; the completely eclipsed the other members of the cast.
I went through hell week, and had extremely sore and black and blue buttocks for awhile.
I didn't have fifty four dollars on hand, so I couldn't go through with formal intention.
Tell Flintridge that it is very doubtful that I will be down for graduation. It is possible,
but improbable. I should like graduating very much, but it give me too little time for working,
I'm afraid.
I shall be happy to see my family again. All the kids much have grown tremendously.
Love,
Linus
P.S. I weigh 146 now.
