Dear Drs. Gordy and Saylor:
I am enclosing copies of the manuscript on "The Propargyl Halides". Because of the press of other work, the manuscript on the aluminum compounds is not yet ready.
Things have not changed much here since you left, except that there is still more war work being done. The only bad news is that there was an explosion a few days ago in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory, which killed one of the assistants.
I shall let you know later about how the aluminum compound turns out.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Dr. Hans Neurath
Department of Biochemistry

Duke University School of Medicine
Durham, North Carolina
Dear Dr. Neurath:
I was glad to receive your letter of March 27, and to learn of your program of physical-chemical study of the effect of heat treatment of globulin fractions. I do not believe that this work which you plan will duplicate in any significant way the work that we are doing and plan to do. We are carrying out an extensive series of investigations, but not along exactly these lines.
You were right in thinking that my picture of denaturation involves unfolding of protein molecules, rather than increase in solvation. As a matter of fact, I do not have any clear picture of what is meant by increase in the degree of solvation. It seems to me that change in degree of solvation would be subsidiary to some other change, and not itself fundamental.
We have made antibodies in vitro by the use of heat, and also by other methods, such as alkali denaturation and slow renaturation. Our investigations are not sufficiently complete to tell whether there is close similarity or considerable difference in the antibodies obtained by these different methods. We are of course going on with the work as rapidly as possible, and we shall publish the results as fast as they are obtained. A brief account, just an outline, is to appear in Science next week, and I shall send you a reprint of it. A more detailed account of the work done so far will appear probably in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Several papers on our other experiments are to come out soon in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, and one in the Journal of Immunology.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. R. E. Rundle
Department of Chemistry
Iowa State College
Ames, Iowa
Dear Dr. Rundle:
I have looked over your manuscript on the platinum alkyl paper, which looks very good to me. Dr. Sturdivant has been so busy that he has not had time even to tell me about its receipt here, and I don't know what can be done about speeding up its publication. Aluminum trimethyl has been reinvestigated here. The job is not completed yet, but it is clear in my opinion that the molecule has the bridge structure.
Dr. Gilman [sic] agents are right in their information that I am feeling much better now. I still have to spend time at home resting in the afternoon, and do not get to hang around the Laboratory as much as I would like, but I try to stick closely to my schedule in the hope that I shall continue to feel better and better.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Dorcas and Milton:
I am sorry to say that when my Government travel order arrived it was dated the 26th, so that I shall not leave here until then and shall arrive in Washington Monday morning and go directly to the Academy meeting. I have a meeting in the morning and also in the afternoon and evening, so I am afraid that I shall not see you until rather late at night. I'll call you on the phone at some time in the late afternoon or early evening. I think that I might be able to stay in Washington until Thursday night or Friday morning, and I am looking forward to being with you.
Ava Helen was pretty sick with the chicken pox, but is over it now.

Dearest Love:
I was glad to get your letter, and Linda's & Crellie's. I sympathize with Linda - because over the Mojave it got rough, and then rougher - and soon I was breathing deeply & swallowing harder and harder. But I succeeded in keeping from coughing up, although I felt pretty sick all the way to Washington - so sick that I got my travel order changed to train travel. Also other plans our [sic] changed. Tomorrow I have NDRC conferences on the instrument, then Thursday morning to New York, seeing Boxorth at the new Bell Labs at Murray Hill in the afternoon, overnight with him, then to Picatinny Arsenal on Friday, overnight with Alfred & Reba, then a big meeting of Section B - Conant, GN Lewis, etc - in the Hotel Pennsylvania on Saturday, leaving that night for Chicago, and then home on the U.P. streamliner, arriving Tuesday morning.
I'll meet Thorfin Saturday. He leaves soon for London, where he'll be the liaison officer of Sec
n
[sic] B. I've seen Lot & Rody and Urey and others. Urey made an ass of himself at the Academy meeting - he said everyone knew that all the 1st rate & 2nd rate astronomers had been elected, & some of the 3rd " ones! So an astronomer got up and asked if perhaps one 4th rate chemist hadn't got in too! How's that?
I've had a good time with Miet & Dorcas. I've spent both evenings here - I didn't go to the smoker. I saw Tolman - he's very busy. Also Kossiakoff, now an Aide in " 's [sic] div
n
[sic]. Also Kisty - he's excited about the possibility of our coming to Bruceton. I've learned some interesting things about new developments along wartime lines.
Dorcas is still hard at her sewing. She now has 555 women to take care of.
I saw Dr Merritt, and Russell, & Cattell, all of whom asked about you. Also many others.
Jewett ran the Academy meetings very poorly. EB Wilson also did his bit to keep things muddled.
We are going to listen to the President's talk in five minutes, and then go to bed.
I love you, darling. Don't be lonesome. Don't feed Linda any more tuna. Keep Liny and Petey in hand. Be a good girl. Your own
Paddy
