Dear Dr. Addis:
Yesterday our patient weighed 168 pounds! This is a loss of twenty pounds since May 20th when he weighed 188. The edema just doesn't exist - it has been evaporated by this fiendish weather here which leaves one gasping in the middle of the night. However, the visiting lecturer likes it and certainly seems to be in good shape - but I can't help but be a little anxious.
The quantity of urine has been high for the past six or eight weeks, too - we don't keep accurate measurements any more but in general the amount stays from 1500 to 1850 or so daily.
Should he not have a bit more salt? One perspires here literally day and night - I believe I'll increase the salt intake to 2 grams say or at most 2 ½.
The diet has remained exactly as it was with the exception of 1 cube of jack cheese (from Mexico) which we analyzed and found it to have only 175 mg per 5 grams protein - i.e. a cube 1" etc. I happened to remember this cheese along about the middle of May (May 26th) and Linus had been so fond of it that I was eager to include it in his diet if the salt content permitted it. He has had a cube of this practically every day since and enjoys it heartlily [sic]! His general condition seems excellent and his spirit is extremely good.
If I have decided incorrectly about the salt will you write or wire? Otherwise we’ll carry on and look forward to seeing you the end of this month.
Linus didn’t see Dr. McMillan in June because he was away and then the end of the term and our trip here kept him very occupied.
I’m sorry to bother you with this. I must mention, too that I decreased the calories since Linus really was getting fat when the calories were around 3000 to 3500 - so then I kept them down to around 2000-2500. I will increase them again or rather be sure that they are around 2500.
Hastily,
Ava Helen Pauling
Linus' weight has been 165 pound for the past twenty years with the exception of this last year.

My Sweet Ones:
How do you like your new home? Are you being helpful in getting ready for your bus ride? The dear Crellie will be happy when that happens!
Did you get off all right? And are your things in order? You can see that I am not a very good writer because sometimes I make this kind of “r” [cursive] and sometimes this kind “r.” You are probably much more consistent.
I want to tell you that our Daddy is feeling better. He hasn’t any edema at all any more. This very warm weather is good for him but I surely don’t like it. It is very hot, even in the middle of the night. The perspiration just rolls all of the time.
I am glad that I didn’t bring you children although I would be very happy to see you right this very minute. I would like to give you all a big squeeze.
Tomorrow we are going up in the Michigan North woods for our 4th of July celebration with Phoebe and [Thorfin?] Hogness. I think that the ride will not be too hard on our Daddy.
He and I send our love to our three little campers and now I must write to that young Linus.
Have a good time and be happy every minute.
Your Mamma,
Ava Helen Pauling

Dearest Peter, Linda and Crellie:
Are you all having a good time and do you like camping? You haven’t spent all of your time writing to the Momma and Daddy.
We had a grand time up on Elk Lake in the northern part of Michigan. I enjoyed swimming in the lake and being in the beautiful woods. The Hognesses have a house there but no electricity so we must use old fashioned kerosene lamps. That was fun. Also we had to cook on a wood stove. That was fun too, and I made popovers one morning and coffee cake another morning for them.
The trees are not like the ones we have. There are many birches, beeches, elms, aspen, ash, maple and oak trees which are not like our live oaks. Then there are many conifers too. Conifers are cone bearing trees like pine, cedar, fir etc.
Our dear Daddy continues to feel better and I am very encouraged.
I wish I could give you all a big hug. You will have to hug each other for me. And give sixteen hugs to the darling Crellie. I hope he likes sleeping in a sleeping bag. I am going to bring you all a nice surprise.
Love and Kisses
from Mamma
Ava Helen Pauling
And
Daddy Linus Pauling

July 14, 1941
6020 Drexel, Chicago, Ill.
Dear Peter, Linda, and Toughy:
We were very happy to get your letters this morning. The Daddy had gone down in the elevator to go to the University but he saw your letters in our mail box so came back up stairs and brought them to me.
I am sorry that you, Linda, and you Crellie, have had a cold. I hope not a bad one. However, did you manage to catch a cold? It is fine that you are all having a good time. Did you like the ride in the bus, Crellie?
Yesterday we had dinner with some people here who have a tiny baby named Ruth. She is only six months old so she is still quite tiny.
The sweet Crellie asked when we are coming home. We will leave here a week from Wednesday—the 23rd of July and go to Berkeley for one week or ten days so that Daddy can go and see Dr. Addis at the hospital in San Francisco again. Then we will go home to Pasadena and we will get in our Zephyr and come to Camp Arcadia on August 7th and get Peter and Linda and Crellie. That will be wonderful. You will have to get your things packed Crellie.
Our Daddy feels quite well but not as well as I wish he did.
We are getting anxious to be at home again.
I hope that you will all have a good time. Are the other girls much younger than you are Linda? You will have to be the Mother.
Today I am supposed to go down town in Chicago. I don’t like it here very much because it is too dirty. Still there are many nice things here and many fine museums and picture galleries.
The Daddy and I send much love and many kisses.
Mamma Ava Helen Pauling

Professor A. B. Lamb
Harvard University
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Dear Professor Lamb:
I think that there is no essential disagreement between Prof. Fajans and me as to the facts regarding his note on "Ionic radii and interionic distances". Our difficulty is that this is a very large subject, on which a book might be written, and in our letters and remarks he and I select different facts and different points of view for discussion, and hence do not reach concordance of opinion.
I have said that in his note Prof. Fajans has not presented anything new--that the material had been published by him before and discussed by other people. I believe that, in a broad sense, this statement is true. On the other hand, the particular data chosen for discussion had not before been treated in just this way by Prof. Fajans (although they had been discussed from alternative points of view by other people); accordingly Prof. Fajans is right in saying that the note does contain new material. The data are not new; the suggested explanation is not new; the conclusion "The above shows that— the systematic study of deviations from additivity of lattice distances can also give valuable information concerning the interionic forces" is not new; but the precise combination given in the note is new.
Prof. Fajans writes that he could hardly be expected to mention the alternative explanation of the data in his short note. I think that to omit mention of this would give the reader a completely wrong impression of the state of the subject. The subject is so large and complex that a significant and satisfactory brief note cannot be written. Thus Prof. Fajans' argument fails to be convincing because he has not made any corrections for coordination number (the way to do this is given in detail in Zachariasen's paper) or for radius-ratio effects (as made in Pauling's paper). A discussion which ignores these corrections without mentioning the reason for ignoring them is valueless.
It seems to me that since hundreds of pages have been published on "ionic radii and interionic distances" during the last twenty years a suggested re-interpretation of the data would need to be given in detail. A long paper on the subject might well be accepted for publication.
Yours very truly,

Professor H. I. Schlesinger
Department of Chemistry
University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Professor Schlesinger:
I wish to thank you for sending me the check from the University of Chicago, and also for arranging for a room with kitchenette at one of the south side hotels in September.
My wife and I reached home safely. My wife found when she got here that Linda had been pretty sick but was improving rapidly, and now she has been brought home from the hospital.
It was a great pleasure to us to have been in Chicago during the past month, and I want to thank you very much for arranging for our visit.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Pete,
I am glad you are having a good time up there. Down here I was having a lot of fun, only now that Mom and Dad are home I am rapidly finding out all the things I didn’t do and should have done, and all the things I did do and shouldn’t have done.
I went and got Mom off the train at East Los Angeles early Friday morning. Dad came from San Francisco early Saturday morning.
Linda came home from the hospital on Sunday, feeling quite well.
I became a member of the Vista Swim and Racquet Club, so now every time I get a chance I go down there and swim. I find it most fun at night. Both Linda’s hens are setting, although they don’t have enough eggs under them to suit us, and it is too late to get more.
I hope you continue enjoying yourself until you have to come home.
Love,
Linus (jr.)
