Dr. S. T. Gross
Department of Chemistry
University of Illinois
Urbana, Illinois
Dear Dr. Gross:
Dr. Sturdivant and I have read your manuscript on Pb8O4, which I am now returning to you. It seems to us that it is not satisfactory as a structure determination, and I think that you should do some further work on the crystal before publishing the results.
My principal objection is that the agreement between the observed and calculated intensities is really very poor, and can not be considered to prove the correctness of your suggested structure. I see no reason for the calculated intensity values to be given on such a low scale. Why not give them to at least two significant figures? Also no (OOl) data are given. Those should be used to evaluate z. Many basal reflections are absent if z is really 1/4. I think that you should determine the density since the literature value differs appreciably from the x-ray value.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Mr. Schaefer:
The enclosed material is the copy for the first three chapters of the book. The drawings for the new figures in these chapters are coming separately, and copy for the rest of the book will follow soon.
I am uncertain as to whether this should be called a second edition of the book or just a revised printing. What is your advice?

Dear Joe:
I am very pleased indeed to learn that you are applying for a Lalor Fellowship for the coming year with the plan of working at this Institute, and I am glad to give my permission and indeed extend a hearty invitation to you to come here. The problem which you suggest on the development of molecular eigenfunctions seems to me to be a very good one. I have noticed, however, that the announcements of Lalor Fellowships stress applications of chemistry to biology, and I would like to suggest to you that you might be interested in theoretical work on the color of organic molecules with especial reference to naturally occurring substances. You have probably seen my note on this subject in the Proceedings of the National Academy-- I am sending the reprint to you separately. There is a great amount of work which could be done in this field, and if you desire to mention this problem also in your Lalor application you have my approval.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. Earnest Kranz
803 West Huntington Drive
Monrovia, California
Dear Mr. Kranz:
The members of the Department of Chemistry do not in general engage in private practice. I think that you might consult with one of the firms of commercial chemists in this region in order to develop your idea.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling
LP/jr
