Professor A. R. Todd
Director of the Chemical Laboratories
The University of Manchester
Manchester, 13
Dear Alex:
I am glad that you found our Wrinch article satisfactory. I am hoping that there will be no rebuttal to it, and that the cyclol episode can be considered closed, but in any case I should try to have the rebuttal as short and straightforward as Wrinch can be made to make it.
I have been having some fun this spring trying to devise a theory of the color of dyes. This work has gone along very well but calculations are so complex that not many can be done in a finite time.
Yesterday we had the bad luck to have an explosion in the Crellin Laboratory, as a result of the accidental spilling of a large amount of ether. The big laboratory on the south end of the top floor was pretty thoroughly wrecked, with all the windows blown out and fume cabs and some of the chemical desks destroyed. Fortunately no one was badly injured and the loss is covered by insurance.
Dr. English, with the aid of Haagen-Smit and Bonner, has synthesized the cell proliferation hormone on which he has been working for three years. It is a l,10-decene dicarboxylic acid, with a double bond in the 1,2 position. I think that a lot of additional work can be done in this field. English has gone to Yale where he is to be instructor.
With best regards to you and Alison, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Warren:
I am enclosing prints of an ascillation x-ray photograph of Glycine and a Laue x-ray photograph of d-glutamic acid which you might find useful as illustrations for your article.
Perhaps you read in the papers that we had a fire in the Crellin Laboratory. Fortunately no one was injured and the damage was restricted almost entirely to the undergraduate organic laboratory, with very little research lost. We had complete insurance coverage and shall have the laboratory in shape for the students when the Institute opens next month.
Sincerely yours,

Dear John:
We would be very glad if you could speak before the small group of structural chemists who are around this summer some time, perhaps during the coming week. We have been holding seminars at 4:00 on Monday afternoons, but any other day would be just as satisfactory. I hope that you can cone up to Pasadena for this purpose.
Wilson has now returned and is looking forward to seeing yon some time about your new theory of dielectric constant of liquids. The men in the laboratory have heard reports from Wilson on Onsager's theory and his treatment of it, and would understand pretty well if you wore to present your theory.
With best regards, I am

My dear Linus:
I have returned from a short vacation for which the only books I took were a half a dozen detective stories and your "Chemical Bond". I found yours the most exciting of the lot. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate having a book dedicated to me which is such a very important contribution. I think your treatment comes nearer to my own views than that of any other authors I know and there are very few places where I could possibly disagree with you and those perhaps because I have not thought about the thing sufficiently. I feel a little doubt about your treatment of such things as sulfate ion, but I certainly have nothing better to propose.
I doubt whether you will agree so completely with a paper on color that Calvin and I are getting out in the October number of the Chemical Reviews. We have, however, begun what I notice that you predicted in your book and have fired the first broad side in the battle with the color problem. How many of our shots prove to be hits remains to be seen.
I am delighted that you are going to be with us for a time this year and as soon as you decide just what period it is going to be I hope you will let me know.
With kindest regards to Mrs. Pauling and yourself, I am
Yours very sincerely,

Professor Gilbert N. Lewis
Department of Chemistry
University of California
Dear Professor Lewis:
I am very happy to know that you are pleased with my book, and feel that it is good enough to be worthy of its dedication to you. You know, of course, that I had you in mind continually while it was being written, and I have been hoping that my treatment would prove to be acceptable to you.
I shall look forward to seeing the paper on color which you and Calvin are to have in the October number of Chemical Reviews. I have been working on the theory of the color of dyes for some months, and spoke about my preliminary results in Chicago. I mentioned very briefly in my chapter in Gilman's ORGANIC CHEMISTRY a fundamental idea regarding the color of dyes, and some months ago I thought of a way of making approximate quantum mechanical calculations- the difficulty is, of course, to find an approximate treatment which is reasonably simple and still good enough to be significant.
I do not know yet when I shall be able to come to Berkeley for the stay which I have promised to make, but I think that my wife and I will come for two or three days during the week of September 11 or possibly a few days before then.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
