Dear Warren:
I was very glad to learn that the appropriation to the Institute for the coming year was approved by your Trustees, and I wish again to express my deep gratitude to you and your great interest in our work.
I have just returned to Pasadena from a four-weeks trip to Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Minneapolis, where I attended a meeting of the A. A. A. S. and a symposium on the color of organic substances arranged by Mulliken, and visited several laboratories.
Your letter of June 12 was forwarded to me, and I have continued to think about our major problem of the appointment of a professor of organic chemistry. In submitting a request for approval of the maximum budget of $70,000 for the coming year, I had in mind the possibility that an adjustment might be made later whereby a part of this sum allocated for apparatus or salaries of fellows might be transferred to the salary of a professor, in case that an appointment could be made during the year. At present we are considering very seriously the possibility of giving appointment to Zechmeister. Szent-Györgyi, during his visit here last month, spoke very highly of Zechmeister, and even remarked, perhaps jocularly, that it would be fine if an institute for him and Zechmeister could be built on the northwest corner of the campus. Zechmeister in a letter to me written about three months ago said that he was very much worried about the political situation in Hungary and that he and his wife were considering the desirability of leaving the country. In answering this letter I asked him to tell me of the conclusion they reached. In a letter written June 13, 1939, he has answered in the following way:
"We have now made up our minds in respect to a possible change. My position here is not such as would suggest a change in an imperative way, perhaps even not in the long run, but I do not like the atmosphere very much. We are inclined to leave if conditions were offered which would enable me to carry on with my work possibly on a larger scale than in this country."
I think accordingly that there is a reasonable chance that he would accept appointment here, although, as you pointed out to me some time ago, Zechmeister’s position with respect to research would probably not be changed very much, except that he would be relieved very largely of the burden of teaching elementary courses, and would have better instrumental facilities available that at Pecs.
I would be very happy if you could give us any further information which might assist us in reaching a decision regarding Zechmeister.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

The stibine complex arrived safely, but because of my absence from the laboratory for a month on a trip by car to Chicago and neighboring points it has not yet been photographed. My wife and I drove to meetings at Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago and then returned by way of the Black Hills, Yellowstone, and the Grand Teton National Park. We spend several days in the Teton's climbing, and enjoyed ourselves immensely, although after our final climb we were so stiff that we could not walk for a couple of days. We climbed up Cascade Canyon, intending to have a swim in Lake Solitude, but on arriving there found that the Lake was frozen over. We had planned to go over the Divide and down Paintbrush Canyon, but were stopped by snow on the switchback up the Cirque.
We are hard at work now on plans for getting our crystal structure and electron diffraction calculations made by machine, probably by a punched card machine.
The point you raise in your letter of May 23 regarding strain in the resonance hybrids of methylacetylene is well taken. Apparently the inhibiting effect of the strain is not great enough to eliminate phenomenon, however.
I think that Sutherland's low force constant for the central bond in diacetylene must be in error.
Since returning from Chicago I have not yet found out from Kossiakoff how the dibromohydrindene and tetralene work is coming along. We shall write
[page 2]
to you about it later. Kossiakoff is studying all of the five bromine compounds which you list.
Eyster's name is Eugene H. Eystsr, Physics Department, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. We saw him in Madison, and found that he was feeling all right, although of course the loss of a couple of fingers on the right hand is no small matter.
I am sorry that we had to reach the decision not to come to England this summer, and I hope that our European trip is not delayed indefinitely.
Sincerely yours,
LP/jr

Dear Lynn:
I was glad to read your interesting papers on potassium and ammonium fluogermanate and potassium molybdocyanide dihydrate, which Lamb sent on to me. I have recommended their publication, suggesting only that you might wish to point out that the molybdocyanide configuration is the same as that of the ZrO8 groups in zircon. This is a very interesting investigation, and I am sorry that I did not get it included in my book.
Miss Rooke says that she has sent you our recent crystal structure reprints.
We hope that you do succeed in carrying out your plan of coming to Pasadena in the middle of September and we are looking forward to seeing yon then.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. L. E. Sutton
1, Eastchurch
Iffley, Oxford
England
Dear Sutton:
The sight of your letter of April 25th on my desk has reminded me that I owe you a letter. Without doubt you know by this time that I have decided that our projected European trip for this summer is not taking place. This decision was due to several factors; (1) that I have a great deal of work to do in the Laboratories, (2) that the European political situation looked sufficiently disturbing to suggest that our trip might not be as pleasant as it should be, and (3) that the job of financing our new house has left me pretty short of money.
Schomaker and Stevenson and the other electron diffraction men have been making good progress, with the help of the best photographs that the apparatus has yet produced. They have photographed methane, N2, O2, Br2, and CO2, and have obtained results agreeing with the spectroscopic ones to within 0.005 Å in every case except methane, for which 1.11 Å was found. Schomaker has shown that it is often desirable to consider the temperature factors in calculating intensity curves. The boys have completed structure determinations for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, finding the C-O distance 1.21 or 1.22 Å, and Schomaker's new value for the C=C double bond distance is 1.33 Å. This suggests a small revision in the double bond radii.
Niemann and I have received a reply to our protein paper in the form of a very long rebuttal submitted by Wrinch. This consists mostly of repetition of old published statements together with some new incorrect statements, and we are hoping that Lamb will be able to talk her out of publishing the rebuttal or will require extensive revision of it, so that the issues involved are not clouded in a mass of verbiage.
My wife and I had a pleasant months trip by car to Chicago. On the way back we camped in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in Yellowstone, and in the Grand Teton National park, where we made some interesting climbs.
With best regards to Mrs. Sutton, I am
Sincerely yours,
LP/jr
