Dear Dwight:
You can get pieces of glass coated with aluminum in various places. I am sure that this work can be done in the Physics Department at Ithaca, and that by speaking to Professor Gibbs you could make arrangements for getting your mirrors. I believe that I saw a report on work of this sort at Ithaca in one of the recent physics journals. Moreover, Badger tells me that commercial firms advertise this service in the Scientific American. If for some reason these sources were unsatisfactory to you, you might be able to get Dr. John Strong of this Institute to do the work for you. He is the man who puts the aluminum coatings upon the big telescope mirrors here, and who prepared Badger's mirrors. I haven't seen him recently and Badger says that he may not have his set-up for small mirrors working now, but if you want you might write directly to Strong.
I am glad to learn that your new protein work looks
promising.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
LP/jr

- LP Research Notebooks, RNB 35b RE: Glued Bone Fractures
Glued Bone Fractures
On December 15, 1938, 10 AM, Ike Bower brought to me Dr. A. Brockway, orthopaedic specialist [Brockway's contact information] and a friend Mr. Braseman (?). Dr. Brockway had the idea of treating fractures by glueing the bones together, instead of using metal plates, metal being unsatisfactory because of electrolytic action leading to necrosis.
I said that dryness produced by heat would be necessary, and he pointed out that this would be injurious if cells were killed. I suggested that the fractured surfaces be dried to the extent necessary by heat (Mr Braseman suggested hot air), with hot blue applied immediately and cooled quickly (Mr Braseman suggested cold air).
Dr. Brockway said that the glue should be capable of complete absorption in the body after holding for three weeks. I said that I thought an animal glue should have this property.
I pointed out that rubber-base cement, casein glue, etc. would probably be unsatisfactory, but that animal glue, containing protein products, should be good.
He said that the glue should be sterile. I said that animal glue could be sterilized. I pointed out the necessity of having close approximation of the fractured surfaces in order that a good strong joint be obtained.
He said that liquids could be kept away for a few minutes, and suggested trying the joints in physiological salt solution.

Mr. George M. Reynolds
4901 Ellis Avenue
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Mr. Reynolds:
I am very glad indeed to give a strong recommendation to you for the renewal of the Rosenwald Fund Grant to Mr. James B. LuValle. Mr. LuValle has made an excellent record in his graduate work with us. He is classed in the upper group of our graduate students, despite the fact that the graduate students are very carefully selected and have in general great ability. Mr. LaValle has made already an outstanding record in research. He has more energy and enthusiasm, I believe, than any other graduate student working in the molecular structure field, and he has, during the summer and fall of this year, been the mainstay of Dr. Schomaker in the difficult job of constructing an improved electron diffraction apparatus.
His research program on the study of unsaturated conjugated systems containing oxygen is well planned and is now well under way. There is very little doubt that he will have completed by June 1940 a thoroughly satisfactory doctor's dissertation and that he will receive his Doctorate at that time, if he is able to continue his studies. He is hoping then to be given appointment in some university, such as Fisk, and I believe that with his many qualifications he will surely receive an appointment of this type.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

December 27, 1938
Dr. H. D. Springall
Lincoln College
Oxford, England
Dear Spring:
I was very glad indeed to receive your letter and to learn about your life during the list six months. This period has indeed been a serious one for the world. I am glad that you are able to continue work for some time at Oxford, and I hope that a suitable permanent position for you turns up.
For some months my spare time has been devoted to completing the structure determinations for dimethylacetylene, dimethyldiacetylene, cyanogen, diacetylene, and methyl cyanide, for incorporation with methylacetylene in a paper treating the methylacetylene problem thoroughly. This work is now being completed, and after much thought I have succeeded in writing what seems to me to be a satisfactory discussion. When the paper is typed, in a day or two, I shall send a copy to you, and at the same time submit it to the J.A.C.S. for publication. Please write immediately to me about any suggestions which you have to make, so that they can be incorporated in the proof.
We have on hand photographs of bromohydrindene, bromotetralene, and dibromoxylene, which seem suitable for structure determinations. I could send them to you, or I can measure them and make the calculations here, for joint publication with you. This second course would probably be simpler, since we have facilities here, although it is true that now that you are at Oxford you could do the work in Sutton's laboratory. I shall keep the photographs until I hear from you.
Schlatter has not yet completed his cyclopropane preparation, mainly because he has been kept so busy with class work during his first term as a graduate student that he hasn't been able to devote much time to research.
I shall write to Sutton separately about sulfurylchloride. Beach and Stevenson at Princeton have also made another investigation of this substance.
If you send some trimethylstibinedibromide I shall have the trimethylstibine photographed.
We are now getting nicely settled in the new laboratory, with the electron diffraction apparatus just about in operation again and with most of the x-ray apparatus at work. Did you know that Coryell had been appointed Instructor at U.C.L.A.? We see him about once a week, but not often enough to keep us from missing him. Corey is staying on here, and he has just finished up Albrecht's investigation of the crystal structure of glycene, which is thus the first amino acid for which a satisfactory crystal structure determination has been made. Levy is spending a post-doctorate year, and is working on alanine, while Hughes, whom you remember at Cornell, is attempting to handle glycylglycine. I hope that complete structure determinations can be made of other compounds in this group also. Corey himself is going to carry on x-ray work on the proteins themselves from now on.
Please write again. With best wishes for the coming year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
