Techn. Hochschule Stuttgart
Seestrasse 73
Stuttgart, Germany
Dear Professor Ewald:
I was very glad to receive your letter on my return from the East. My wife and I were very pleasantly surprised on arriving in New York to learn that your daughter Rose was there, and we had the good fortune to see her and to talk with her about you and even to get her to stay overnight with us in the apartment of the sculptress friend with whom we were making our home. We are hoping that Rose will be able to make a visit with us in Pasadena before long.
I was glad to have your comments about our book. Dr. Wilson and I shall see what can be done about the theory of the metallic states when we prepare a second edition. I am looking forward to seeing your treatment of the linear chain and I do hope that you are successful in formulating a satisfactorily accurate treatment of the three-dimensional lattice.
I realize that I have not yet returned to you the two copies of your Handbuch article which you were 30 kind as to lend to M nearly two years ago. I shall be glad to return them at once in ease that you desire that this be done; However, it occurs to me that you might desire some other disposition to be made of them and accordingly I shall hold then until I hear from you again.
We shall be giving a detailed course on crystal structure again after another year. Is the second edition of your book going to be available at that time? I am sure that McGraw-Hill Book Company, with whose representative I spoke while in New York, would be very glad to have a satisfactory book on crystal structure, they seemed to be extremely sorry that through some accident they were lead into publishing Davey's terrible book.
With kindest regards to Mrs. Ewald and the children, I am
Very sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dr. Walter M. Boothby
Mayo Clinic
Rochester, Minnesota
Dear Dr. Boothby:
Dr. Charles D. Coryell has asked me to write to you in regard to his application for a position with you. Dr. Coryell has been very well trained in general and physical chemistry and has also a good knowledge of organic chemistry. His experience in biochemical work has been restricted to the last year. During this time, however, he has learned a good bit of biochemical technique in connection with his work on hemoglobin and he has become very much interested in biochemical problems in general, and especially in the application to them of modern physical chemical methods.
I consider Dr. Coryell to be a very able research man,
I feel that he can be recommended for biochemical work much more strongly than the average able man whose interests have lain in the field of general and physical chemistry because of the fact that he works very hard and energetically and his interest in a new field is as easily developed. He tackled the investigations on hemoglobin which he has been carrying on with me with great enthusiasm and ingenuity, and I am sure that he would show the same traits in attacking other biochemical problems. I shall be very sorry indeed not to have Dr. Coryell continue this work during the coming; year; his decision not to accept re-appointment here is based on personal reasons.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Dr. Landsteiner:
I was very much interested in the problems connected with antibodies which you described to me and also in the possibility that you mention or your coming to Pasadena for a visit. We would be very glad indeed if you were to find it possible to visit us here for awhile. Although some work is done here during the summer, many people are away at that time, and I think that it would be most satisfactory if you were to some when the Institute is in session, between September and June.
