Saturday Feb.1. [1936]
Dearest Paddy:
I didn't write to you at all yesterday. I hope this reaches you.
You are a sweetheart. Yesterday I had a good time both at the Folk dancing and at the Edsalls. The English couple were very nice. He was sorry indeed, to miss you. He knows Bernal, Dirac, Fowler, etc. We will see them in New York next month. He is a physicist interested in biology a la Del Bruck. He knows him. He has been in Stockholm and came through Russia to San Francisco.
Thursday I was awakened at midnight by Peter who

When he was in bed with me — I took him in poor little fellow — he said "I won't pester you Mamma." Last night Linda slept with me but she is such a wiggler I didn't get much sleep.
Sometimes I'm amused at the effect I have on people. I'll tell you about this when you come home.

I called Mrs. Augé to ask her to come to the F.D. I was surprised again by the similarity of her voice to Ruth Tolman's. Her English is somewhat better though. She came and is really awfully nice and it is a shame her sphere is so limited. I wish she could be your Secretary. She probably has more responsibility than Miss Rooke, though. [switch to child's cursive handwriting here] Peter seltp [sic] with mama Thursday night. [end child's handwriting]
We are getting along well. The children forget that you are away and Linda and Crellie both say "Where is Daddy?" at mealtime.
We liked getting your telegram this morning. You are a darling.

I hope you have been happy on the train.
Love to you —
Ava Helen Pauling

- Letter from LP to Professor G. B. Kistiakowky. [Filed under: K: Individual Correspondence, Box #198.14]
February 11, 1936
Professor G. B. Kistiakowski,
Department of Chemistry,
Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass.
Dear George,-
I want to congratulate you on the excellent and valuable researches on heats of hydrogenation that you are carrying on, and now that you have published some of your results I trust that you are continuing the investigations. It seems to me that accurate work of this type could he carried on for a very large number of compounds with great value.
I was pleased to learn from Wilton that you would be willing to provide us with samples of some of your purified hydrocarbons for electron diffraction investigation. Dr. Brockway has already photographed cis and trans 2-butenes obtaining a direct verification of the identification that you have adopted. In addition he found that the interatomic distances and bond angles are those given by the table of radii and the idea of the tetrahedral carbon atom. We would like especially to have a small sample (a gram or two) of tetramethylethylene. In case that you happen to have dimethyl acetylene or methyl acetylene we would be very glad to have samples of these also. We would be happy to carry on the electron diffraction study of any substances in which you are interested. If in your entropy calculations you come to the point where such an investigation seems to be worth while I trust that you will let me know.
With very best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,
LP:M
